What an MCP server does for you
On its own, Claude only knows what you paste into the chat. An MCP server gives it a safe, standard way to reach one of your tools: read a Notion page, draft a Gmail reply, pull last month's Stripe payments or check your rankings in Ahrefs.

What is an MCP server?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant like Claude use your other tools. An MCP server is the connector for one tool: once it is added, Claude can read from it and act in it when you ask.
Is it safe to connect MCP servers?
A connected server can see and change data in that tool, so connect only servers from publishers you trust and give the smallest access you need. Hosted servers that use sign-in (OAuth) let you review and revoke access in the tool's own settings.
Do MCP servers cost money?
The servers themselves are usually free, but many connect to a paid product and need an account with it. Each server page lists what you need under requirements.
How do I add an MCP server to Claude?
In Claude Code you add it with one claude mcp add command. In the Claude apps many servers appear in the connectors directory, where you click connect and sign in. Each server page shows both ways.
