Basic Memory
A Markdown knowledge base that Claude reads and writes, and you can open in Obsidian.
Officialby Basic MachinesHosted or on your computerChecked October 18, 2026
Basic Memory saves what you and Claude learn as plain Markdown notes, linked into a knowledge graph through simple observation and relation patterns. The free local version keeps the files on your disk, where you can also edit them in Obsidian or any editor, while the paid Cloud plan hosts them with OAuth sign-in and sync across devices.
Who it is for
- Writers and researchers who keep notes in Markdown
- Obsidian users
- Developers who want project memory they can read and edit
Prompts to try
Once it is connected, ask in plain words. Claude decides when to use the server and asks before it changes anything important.
Write a note summarizing today's decisions about the website redesign and link it to the redesign project note. What did we decide last week about the newsletter schedule?Show my recent notes and build the context around the pricing research topic. How to connect it

How we checked it
Checked the basicmachines-co/basic-memory repo (AGPL-3.0, last commit 2026-10), the basic-memory PyPI package, the Basic Memory docs and the registry entry (io.github.basicmachines-co/basic-memory); the Cloud endpoint answers with an OAuth challenge.
