Power BI Authoring MCP Server
Build and edit Power BI semantic models, measures and DAX by describing the change.
Officialby MicrosoftHosted or on your computerChecked October 18, 2026
Microsoft's Power BI Authoring MCP server lets Claude create and change semantic models in Power BI Desktop, Fabric workspaces or Power BI Project files, from tables and relationships to measures, translations and security roles. The local server is generally available but not supported on macOS, and a Microsoft-hosted endpoint for Fabric workspaces is in preview.
Who it is for
- Power BI developers and model authors
- BI teams on Microsoft Fabric
- Analysts who maintain shared semantic models
Prompts to try
Once it is connected, ask in plain words. Claude decides when to use the server and asks before it changes anything important.
Connect to the Sales Analysis file open in Power BI Desktop and add a plain-English description to every measure.Rename the columns in the Customer table to match the naming style used in the Sales table.Create year-to-date and prior-year versions of the Total Revenue measure and test them with a DAX query. How to connect it
In Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport stdio powerbi-authoring -- npx -y @microsoft/powerbi-modeling-mcp@latest --start
In the Claude desktop app
Customize > Connectors > + Add > Add custom connector, URL: https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/mcp/powerbi/authoring, with your Microsoft Entra app ID as the OAuth Client ID
Hosted address: https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/mcp/powerbi/authoring
Good to know
The local server asks you to accept its EULA and is not supported on macOS. Mac users can switch to the hosted endpoint, which needs your own Entra app registration because Entra ID does not support dynamic client registration.

How we checked it
Checked Microsoft Learn's Power BI MCP pages (updated 2026-09), the microsoft/powerbi-modeling-mcp repo (MIT, v1.0.0 on 2026-09-25), its npm package and the registry entry (com.microsoft/powerbi-modeling-mcp); the hosted endpoint answers with an OAuth challenge.
