EdgarTools MCP Server

Search and read SEC filings, financial statements and insider ownership for free.

Community, verifiedby Dwight Gunning (dgunning)Runs on your computerChecked October 18, 2026

EdgarTools is a popular open-source Python library for SEC EDGAR data, and its built-in MCP server lets Claude look up companies, read 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K filings, pull financial statements and track insider and fund holdings. It needs no API key, only the name and email that the SEC asks every EDGAR user to send.

Who it is for

  • Individual investors
  • Financial analysts and journalists
  • Students learning to read company filings

Prompts to try

Once it is connected, ask in plain words. Claude decides when to use the server and asks before it changes anything important.

Prompt 1
Summarize the risk factors in Nvidia's latest 10-K and what changed from the year before.
Prompt 2
Compare revenue and net income for Coca-Cola and PepsiCo over the last eight quarters.
Prompt 3
Which insiders bought or sold Tesla shares in the past three months?

How to connect it

In Claude Code

  1. claude mcp add --transport stdio edgartools --env EDGAR_IDENTITY="YOUR_NAME YOUR_EMAIL" -- uvx --from "edgartools[ai]" edgartools-mcp

In the Claude desktop app

Add this to claude_desktop_config.json, then restart the app:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "edgartools": {
      "command": "FULL_PATH_TO_UVX",
      "args": [
        "--from",
        "edgartools[ai]",
        "edgartools-mcp"
      ],
      "env": {
        "EDGAR_IDENTITY": "YOUR_NAME YOUR_EMAIL"
      }
    }
  }
}

Good to know

Claude Desktop needs the full path to uvx (find it with which uvx) because it does not read your shell PATH.

How we checked it

Checked the dgunning/edgartools repo (MIT, about 2,800 stars, commits through 2026-10, release v5.62.0), its MCP setup and tools docs, the edgartools package on PyPI and the registry entry (io.github.dgunning/edgartools).
