Git MCP Server
Read history, diffs and branches and make commits in a local Git repository.
Reference serverby Model Context ProtocolRuns on your computerChecked October 18, 2026
The Git reference server gives Claude a fixed set of Git tools for one repository: status, diffs, logs, branches, staging and commits. It is handy in chat apps such as Claude Desktop that cannot run shell commands, while Claude Code can already run git on its own.
Who it is for
- Claude Desktop users working with a local repository
- Developers who want a small, predictable set of Git actions
- People learning how MCP servers are built
Prompts to try
Once it is connected, ask in plain words. Claude decides when to use the server and asks before it changes anything important.
Show me what changed in this repository since yesterday and summarize it in plain English.Create a branch called fix-typos, stage the edited README and commit it with a short message.Which branches contain the commit that added the login page?How to connect it
In Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport stdio git -- uvx mcp-server-git --repository /ABSOLUTE/PATH/TO/REPO
In the Claude desktop app
Add this to claude_desktop_config.json, then restart the app:
{
"mcpServers": {
"git": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": [
"mcp-server-git",
"--repository",
"/path/to/git/repo"
]
}
}
}Good to know
Its README still describes it as early development; a Docker image (mcp/git) is also available.

How we checked it
Checked the server's folder in the modelcontextprotocol/servers repo (last commit 2026-10-10) and its README, and the PyPI package mcp-server-git (2026.10.10, published 2026-10-11, declared MIT).
