Shopify Dev MCP

Search Shopify docs and API schemas and validate GraphQL, Liquid and extension code.

Officialby ShopifyRuns on your computerChecked October 18, 2026

Shopify's Dev MCP server runs on your computer and helps coding assistants build Shopify apps and themes by searching the official docs and API schemas. It also checks GraphQL operations, Liquid and theme files, and UI extension code against Shopify's schemas, and it needs no login.

Who it is for

  • Shopify app and theme developers
  • Agencies that build Shopify stores
  • Developers writing Admin API scripts

Prompts to try

Once it is connected, ask in plain words. Claude decides when to use the server and asks before it changes anything important.

Prompt 1
Write a GraphQL Admin API mutation that adds a metafield to a product, and validate it.
Prompt 2
Check my theme folder for Liquid errors before I upload it.
Prompt 3
Which Admin API version should this app target, and what changed in it?

How to connect it

In Claude Code

  1. claude mcp add --transport stdio shopify-dev-mcp -- npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest

In the Claude desktop app

Add this to claude_desktop_config.json, then restart the app:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "shopify-dev-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@shopify/dev-mcp@latest"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Good to know

Restart Claude Code after adding it. Published builds send usage telemetry to Shopify; set OPT_OUT_INSTRUMENTATION=true to turn it off.

How we checked it

Checked Shopify's AI Toolkit docs on shopify.dev (which give the Claude Code command) and the npm package @shopify/dev-mcp (ISC, version 1.17.0 published October 2026).
