MotherDuck MCP Server

Query MotherDuck cloud data or local DuckDB files with SQL from Claude.

Officialby MotherDuckHosted or on your computerChecked October 18, 2026

MotherDuck's hosted MCP server lets Claude browse your MotherDuck databases, search the data catalog and run SQL, with a separate read-write query tool that you can block if you only want reads. The open-source local server does the same for DuckDB files, in-memory databases or S3 data, and stays read-only unless you pass a read-write flag.

Who it is for

  • Analysts using DuckDB or MotherDuck
  • Data engineers exploring files and tables
  • Solo founders who want quick answers from their data

Prompts to try

Once it is connected, ask in plain words. Claude decides when to use the server and asks before it changes anything important.

Prompt 1
List my MotherDuck databases and the tables in the analytics one.
Prompt 2
Which product categories grew fastest month over month this year?
Prompt 3
Compare revenue by region for the last two quarters using the sales table.

How to connect it

In Claude Code

  1. claude mcp add --transport http MotherDuck https://api.motherduck.com/mcp

In the Claude desktop app

Customize > Connectors > Discover: search MotherDuck, then select Connect to Claude

Hosted address: https://api.motherduck.com/mcp

Good to know

Run /mcp to sign in; for a local DuckDB file use claude mcp add --transport stdio duckdb -- uvx mcp-server-motherduck --db-path /absolute/path/to/db.duckdb instead.

How we checked it

Checked MotherDuck's MCP setup docs, its listing in Claude's connectors directory, the motherduckdb/mcp-server-motherduck repo (MIT, release v1.1.0 in 2026-10) and the PyPI package; the hosted endpoint answers with an OAuth challenge.
