Memory MCP Server

Give Claude a local knowledge graph of people, projects and facts that lasts across chats.

Reference serverby Model Context ProtocolRuns on your computerChecked October 18, 2026

The Memory server is the official MCP reference implementation of persistent memory: it stores entities, the relations between them and short observations in a local JSONL file. Claude can add, search and delete these facts, so details such as your preferences or project names carry over from one conversation to the next.

Who it is for

  • Anyone who wants Claude to remember context between sessions
  • Developers learning how MCP memory works
  • Privacy-minded users who want memory kept on their own machine

Prompts to try

Once it is connected, ask in plain words. Claude decides when to use the server and asks before it changes anything important.

Prompt 1
Remember that I prefer short answers and that my main project is called Bluebird.
Prompt 2
What do you remember about my coworker Dana?
Prompt 3
Show me everything in your memory graph and delete anything about my old job.

How to connect it

In Claude Code

  1. claude mcp add --transport stdio memory -- npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-memory

In the Claude desktop app

Add this to claude_desktop_config.json, then restart the app:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "memory": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@modelcontextprotocol/server-memory"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Good to know

Set MEMORY_FILE_PATH (for example --env MEMORY_FILE_PATH=/path/to/memory.jsonl) so the memory file lives in a folder you control.

How we checked it

Checked the src/memory folder of the modelcontextprotocol/servers repo (last commit 2026-10-10, release v1.0.0 on 2026-10-11), its README and LICENSE, and the @modelcontextprotocol/server-memory npm package.
