How to install a skill in Claude Code

  1. Step 1

Copy the install prompt from the skill's page and paste it into Claude Code.

  2. Step 2

Claude runs the installer and puts the skill in ~/.claude/skills/ so it works in every project.

  3. Step 3

Start a new session and ask for the job in plain words. Claude picks the skill up on its own.

The quickest way is to let Claude Code do it. Every skill page here has this prompt filled in with the right address; this is what it looks like:

Install prompt for Claude Code
Install the skill at [skill address] for Claude Code so it works in every project: run `npx skills add [skill address] -a claude-code -g -y` in my terminal. If Node.js is missing, tell me how to install it first. When it's done, confirm the skill is installed and tell me how to use it.

Prefer to do it by hand? A skill is just a folder with a SKILL.md file. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ to use it everywhere, or in .claude/skills/ inside a project to share it with that project only.

Good to know

  • Skills that need extra programs (Python, Node.js, LibreOffice) use the ones on your computer, so install those first.
  • Plugin skills can also come with commands and helper agents that only Claude Code runs.

Skills follow one open standard (a folder with a SKILL.md file), so the same skill also works in Claude app, Codex, ChatGPT and Cursor. Facts on this page are checked against Anthropic's own documentation.

Skills teach Claude Code how to do a job. To let it reach your other tools (Notion, Gmail, Shopify and more), see the MCP servers that work in Claude Code.
