Best ChatGPT Courses (2026): Free, Paid and Up to Date
Every course below was checked on its own page on October 22, 2026, including when it was last updated, because ChatGPT changed more this year than most courses did.
By Yotam DahanUpdated 14 min readChoosing an AI course
The best ChatGPT courses in 2026 start with OpenAI's own: OpenAI Academy has three free Apply AI at Work courses that take about four hours together, run on any ChatGPT account and end with a badge you can verify. There is no ChatGPT certification you can sign up for, because OpenAI's only certification program is invite-only for companies and schools. Pay for a course when you want a teacher, a group or more projects, and check first that it teaches ChatGPT Work, the agent OpenAI launched on July 9, 2026.

OpenAI Academy: the free ChatGPT course to start with
OpenAI Academy is OpenAI's own school at academy.openai.com. Its three Apply AI at Work courses launched on June 12, 2026, and on September 21 OpenAI added paths for developers, leaders and educators. The OpenAI help center says the courses are free and "available globally to anyone with a ChatGPT account".
Each course ends with an assessment of 10 to 20 questions drawn from a bank of 50. Score 80% or more and Accredible, a service that hosts digital credentials, emails you a badge that anyone can check. If you fail, you retake it with new random questions. If you are weighing it against Google's course, our Google AI Essentials alternatives guide compares the two.

Which Academy course to take first: the ChatGPT course for beginners
AI Foundations is the ChatGPT course for beginners: you pick a task you do every week and practice clear instructions, context and checking answers on it. Applied AI Foundations turns that task into a repeatable workflow. Agents and Workflows teaches you to hand structured work to an agent, which in October 2026 means ChatGPT Work. OpenAI recommends taking them in that order.
| Course | Time | Level | What you practice | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI Foundations | About 70 minutes | Introduction | Clear instructions, useful context, reviewing answers, responsible use | A ChatGPT account and a real task |
| Applied AI Foundations | About 80 minutes | Intermediate | Breaking a recurring task into steps with review points | A ChatGPT account and a real task |
| Agents and Workflows | About 90 minutes | Intermediate | Giving an agent context, outputs, boundaries and checkpoints | A ChatGPT account with access to agent capabilities |
Day 1
AI Foundations, about 70 minutes, on one real task
Day 2
Use the same habits on that task again
Day 3
Applied AI Foundations, about 80 minutes
Day 5
Agents and Workflows, about 90 minutes, in the desktop app
Week 2
Hand one real task to ChatGPT Work
What you need before your first lesson
A ChatGPT account
The free plan works. Badges attach to that account's email, and OpenAI says Academy accounts can't be merged later, so use the one you will keep.
The desktop app
ChatGPT Work runs in the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac and Windows on every plan, Free included. On the web it needs Plus, Pro or a work plan.
One real task
Every course asks you to practice on work you already do, such as a weekly report, a client email or a meeting summary.
English
The course pages are in English. The Academy site itself can switch to French, Japanese or Korean.
OpenAI also has a free set of ChatGPT Work walkthroughs at learn.chatgpt.com/training: a 20 to 25 minute hands-on tutorial and eight short walkthroughs of 6 to 10 minutes on plugins, scheduled tasks, slides and the built-in browser. They come without a badge, but they are the quickest way to see ChatGPT Work before the third course.
ChatGPT certification: what you can actually earn
OpenAI talks about three credentials, and only the first two are open to everyone:
- A badge for each course. Finish the course, pass its assessment with 80% or more, and Accredible emails you a badge you can add to LinkedIn.
- An OpenAI Academy certificate of completion for finishing all three courses and their assessments, which OpenAI calls the Foundations pathway.
- OpenAI Certified, the actual OpenAI certification. It is a program inside ChatGPT powered by Coursera, with credentials sent through Credly, and it is open only to ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces by invitation (OpenAI's help page).
OpenAI's own wording on the first two is clear: badges and certificates of completion "are not certifications and do not guarantee eligibility for a future certification."
Is a ChatGPT certificate worth it?
A small plus, rarely a deciding one. Here is what each is good for:
- Academy badges: a free, verifiable line on LinkedIn that shows you learned from the source.
- OpenAI Certified: worth doing if your employer's Enterprise workspace offers it, since it is the only OpenAI credential that is a certification.
- What actually persuades: a before-and-after of one real task, such as a report that took two hours and now takes twenty minutes, with the prompt and the result.
Best ChatGPT courses compared
The best ChatGPT course for most people is the free Academy path; a paid one earns its price when you want more projects, a teacher's walk-through of ChatGPT Work or a subscription you already pay for. Every course was checked on its own page on October 22, 2026. Udemy prices change with your country and the current sale, so they are not listed.
| Course | Price | Length | Certificate | Last updated | Ratings |

Free ChatGPT course with certificate, or free lessons without one
OpenAI Academy is the only free ChatGPT course with a certificate in the table: a badge per course and a certificate of completion for the full pathway. The other free routes stop short of that. Coursera lets you enroll in Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT for free, but the shareable certificate needs a paid option. LinkedIn Learning offers a free month and DataCamp lets you start for free, but both certificates come with a subscription, and OpenAI's ChatGPT Work walkthroughs have no certificate at all. If a ChatGPT course with certificate is what you need, start with the Academy and add a paid one only for depth.
Best ChatGPT course on Udemy
Pick by fit, rating count and the month of the last update, then open the curriculum, because Udemy's "last updated" date changes when any lesson changes. Every paid Udemy course ends with a Udemy certificate of completion.
Steve Ballinger
The most-rated ChatGPT-for-work course on Udemy we found (130,869 ratings, 285,675 students), updated July 2026 with a 16-lecture ChatGPT Work section. Old material is parked in a section labeled Retired Lectures, which is honest, but its learning goals still name ChatGPT 5.
Ryan Ahmed
Built entirely around ChatGPT Work: skills, plugins, connectors and scheduled tasks, updated September 2026. Only 90 ratings so far, and its 2-hour GPT-6 Astra section matters most on Pro, since OpenAI ties Astra to the Pro reasoning option.
Julian Melanson and Benza Maman
43 hours across ChatGPT, Claude and dozens of other tools, updated October 2026. Its ChatGPT part still teaches you to create custom GPTs, which personal plans can no longer do.
ChatGPT Work courses and the Coursera classic
For a short ChatGPT Work course, LinkedIn Learning has the two newest we found. Matt Wolfe's 38-minute beginner course is about which tasks to hand over. Brice Challamel, who leads AI strategy and adoption at OpenAI, spends 1 hour 18 minutes building an "AI chief of staff", including a daily brief that runs on a schedule.
Vanderbilt's Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT, taught by Jules White, has 747,222 learners on Coursera. It launched on May 26, 2023 (Vanderbilt's announcement), so its prompt patterns still hold up while its screens show a ChatGPT that no longer exists.
DeepLearning.AI's ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers, by Isa Fulford of OpenAI and Andrew Ng, is a different thing: it teaches the OpenAI API in Python notebooks, so it suits developers rather than people who work in the ChatGPT app.
ai school does not sell a ChatGPT course, so it is not ranked here. If what you want from ChatGPT Work and scheduled tasks is repeat work that runs on its own across your apps, that is automation, and our Autopilot course teaches it with n8n, Make and Claude Code. It is in early access, open for pre-order.
How to check a ChatGPT course before you pay
Most ChatGPT courses were recorded for a product that has since changed. These are the 2026 changes that make lessons go stale, from OpenAI's ChatGPT Work announcement, its GPT-4o retirement notice and its custom GPT retirement FAQ:
- May 26, 2023Vanderbilt launches Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT on Coursera
- February 13, 2026GPT-4o, GPT-4.1 and GPT-5 leave ChatGPT
- June 12, 2026OpenAI Academy launches AI Foundations, Applied AI Foundations, and Agents and Workflows
- July 9, 2026ChatGPT Work arrives with a new desktop app, plugins and scheduled tasks
- September 11, 2026OpenAI announces that custom GPTs will retire; personal plans can no longer create new ones
- October 7, 2026GPT-6 reaches ChatGPT's Chat mode
- December 11, 2026Custom GPTs and their pages are scheduled to retire
So the fastest test is a free preview lesson. Look for four signals:
- A Work option next to Chat: ChatGPT has had a Chat mode and a Work mode since July 9, 2026. A course that never shows Work was recorded earlier or skips agents.
- GPT-4o in the model picker: GPT-4o left ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, so those screens are older than that.
- A lesson that has you create a custom GPT: new GPT creation is closed on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, and custom GPTs retire on December 11, 2026. OpenAI's replacement is plugins, which bundle reusable instructions (skills) with connected apps.
- "Agent mode" or typing /agent: OpenAI's help page now says ChatGPT agent "is no longer available" and points to ChatGPT Work instead.

Facts as of October 2026: ChatGPT Work launched on July 9, 2026 and replaced agent mode for multi-step tasks. GPT-4o left ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. New custom GPTs can't be created on Free, Go, Plus or Pro, and custom GPTs are scheduled to retire on December 11, 2026, with plugins and skills replacing them.

I use ChatGPT on the [PLAN] plan for [WHAT I DO AT WORK].The image at the top of this page shows a real run: we filled this prompt in with a sample six-lesson course and sent it to ChatGPT logged out. It flagged the GPT-4o, custom GPT and agent mode lessons and kept the prompting, meeting and spreadsheet lessons.
Learning ChatGPT in another language
OpenAI Academy's course pages are in English. Switch the site to French, Japanese or Korean and the menus change, but the course text stays in English with a Translate button. OpenAI also publishes free "Using ChatGPT" guide pages in French, Spanish and Portuguese on openai.com, without badges. This guide exists in French, Spanish and Portuguese too, each with its own table of local courses and the funding rules of that market.
What learning ChatGPT costs: the course and the plan
You pay for up to two things: the course and the ChatGPT plan you practice on. Courses come in four price models:
Free and official
OpenAI Academy and OpenAI's ChatGPT Work walkthroughs. You pay nothing, and a free ChatGPT account is enough.
One-time purchase
Udemy and most independent course sites. On Udemy, the price depends on your country and the current sale.
Subscription
LinkedIn Learning, Coursera Plus ($59 a month or $399 a year) and DataCamp. Good value only if you use the rest of the catalog.
Live training
A trainer and a group, often paid by an employer. Worth it if your team needs to learn the same workflows together.
The plan is the cost people forget. Here are OpenAI's prices for individuals:
From OpenAI's pricing docs, checked October 22, 2026. chatgpt.com/pricing shows your local currency. Business costs $20 per user a month billed yearly.
For the Academy, Free is enough, and ChatGPT Work runs in the desktop app on every plan. A course that builds custom GPTs needs a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace that allows it, and only until December 11, 2026, and a course built around GPT-6 Astra is aimed at Pro. Our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison explains what each ChatGPT plan adds.
Quick check0 of 3 correct
A ChatGPT course shows GPT-4o in the model picker. What does that tell you?
Not quite.
OpenAI retired GPT-4o from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, so any screen that still offers it is older than that.
Which credential can anyone with a ChatGPT account earn from OpenAI today?
Not quite.
OpenAI Certified is invite-only for Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Academy badges and the pathway certificate are open to everyone, and OpenAI says they are not certifications.
Which OpenAI Academy course is built around ChatGPT Work?
Not quite.
OpenAI's help center lists ChatGPT Work as the product focus of Agents and Workflows, and the course asks for access to agent capabilities.
What to do next
This week, open AI Foundations with your free ChatGPT account and one real task from your work, and finish it in a single sitting. Take Applied AI Foundations and Agents and Workflows over the next few days, using the desktop app for the third. For a month of practice after that, follow the plan in our guide on how to learn AI. If you want to go further than chatting, our all-courses bundle covers building sites, AI content and automation, all in early access.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to learn ChatGPT?
OpenAI's three Apply AI at Work courses take about four hours by its own estimates: 70, 80 and 90 minutes. Feeling at ease takes longer, so plan on a few weeks of daily use on your own tasks after the courses.
Will a ChatGPT course certificate help me get a job?
On its own, only a little. A badge or a certificate of completion shows you finished a course; a before-and-after example of real work you did with ChatGPT shows an employer or a client far more.
Is Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT on Coursera still worth taking?
For its prompt patterns, yes, because they still work. Its screens date from its May 2023 launch, so take OpenAI Academy's courses first for today's ChatGPT, then use the Coursera course for extra practice.
Can I use ChatGPT without an account?
In most countries you can chat at chatgpt.com without signing in, one conversation at a time, and nothing is saved. OpenAI says this is not yet available in Europe outside the UK, and every OpenAI Academy course needs you to sign in with a ChatGPT account.
Which ChatGPT course should a small business owner take first?
AI Foundations on OpenAI Academy, practiced on a task from your own business, then Agents and Workflows if you want ChatGPT to take over repeat work. Our guide to the best AI courses for business owners compares wider options.
