Codex Skills

147 skills that work in Codex, checked by hand. We tested 34 of them on a real task, so you can see the result before you install.

OpenAI's AI agent for real work on your files, in the terminal (Codex CLI), in your code editor or in the ChatGPT desktop app. It reads the same SKILL.md skills as Claude.

How to install a skill in Codex

  1. Step 1

Copy the install prompt from the skill's page and paste it into Codex.

  2. Step 2

Codex runs the installer and puts the skill in ~/.agents/skills/, so every project sees it.

  3. Step 3

Start a new session and describe the job. Codex uses the skill when it fits, or type $skill-name to call it.

The quickest way is to let Codex do it. Every skill page here has this prompt filled in with the right address; this is what it looks like:

Install prompt for Codex
Install the skill at [skill address] for Codex so it works in every project: run `npx skills add [skill address] -a codex -g -y` in my terminal. If Node.js is missing, tell me how to install it first. When it's done, confirm the skill is installed and tell me how to use it.

Prefer to do it by hand? A skill is just a folder with a SKILL.md file. Put the folder in ~/.agents/skills/ to use it everywhere, or in .agents/skills/ inside a project to share it with that project only.

Good to know

  • Codex works inside a sandbox by default, so skills that download things or open a browser may ask for permission first.
  • Skills written for Claude that mention Claude-only commands still work, but those specific commands are skipped.

Skills follow one open standard (a folder with a SKILL.md file), so the same skill also works in Claude Code, Claude app, ChatGPT and Cursor. Facts on this page are checked against OpenAI's own documentation.

Skills teach Codex how to do a job. To let it reach your other tools (Notion, Gmail, Shopify and more), see the MCP servers that work in Codex.

Frequently asked questions

Do Claude skills work in Codex?

Yes. Codex reads the same open SKILL.md format, so the skills on this site work in Codex. Install them into ~/.agents/skills/ and Codex finds them.

Where does Codex look for skills?

In .agents/skills/ inside your project (and its parent folders up to the repo root), and in ~/.agents/skills/ for skills you want everywhere.

How do I use a skill in Codex?

Just ask for the job. Codex loads a skill when the request matches its description. To force one, type $ followed by the skill name.

Which Codex skills should I try first?

Start with the ones marked Tested at the top of the list: we installed each of them and ran it on a real task, so you can see what it made before you install it. 147 skills in this directory work in Codex.
