AI product photography means starting with a real photo of your product and using AI to change what surrounds it: the background, the scene, the light or the person holding it. Done that way, one clean phone photo can become a full product gallery without a studio. Done the other way, by asking AI to imagine your product from a description, you get attractive pictures of something you don't sell.

What AI does well with product photos, and where it fails

AI is excellent at everything around a product and unreliable at the product itself. Use this table to decide what to hand over.

JobHand it to AI?Watch out for
Clean white or colored backgroundYesEdges around hair, glass and fine details
Lifestyle scene around the productYesWrong scale, floating products, shadows that don't match the light
Product held or worn by a personPartialHands, fit and the way fabric drapes
Texture and detail close-upsNoAI invents textures your product doesn't have
Labels, logos and small textNoLetters get redrawn, so keep the original pixels

The consistency rule: one master photo per product

Every AI image of a product should come from a real master photo of that product. Shoot one set for every product and every color variant, because AI cannot be trusted to recolor a product accurately.

You don't need a studio for master photos. A phone and a window are enough if you follow these steps:

  1. Light. Use daylight from a window to one side, or two soft lamps. Avoid direct sun and mixed light colors.
  2. Background. Use a plain wall or a sheet of paper in a color that contrasts with the product.
  3. Height. Hold the camera at the product's height, with the lens straight rather than tilted.
  4. Framing. Let the product fill most of the frame with a little space around it, in sharp focus.
  5. Angles. Shoot the front, a three-quarter view, the back and the top, plus one shot in a hand for scale.
  6. No filters. Turn off portrait mode and beauty filters. You want true color, not a nice photo.

The four shots most product pages need

Four shots for every product page

Packshot

The product alone on a clean background. It is usually your main image.

Lifestyle scene

The product where it is used, at the right size, with light that makes sense.

In hand or on model

A person holding, wearing or using it, so buyers can judge scale and fit.

Detail shot

Texture, stitching, ingredients or ports, photographed for real and never generated.

Packshot: swap the background inside Shopify

Shopify's file editor has an AI option called Color background, part of its media generation tools. It finds the product automatically and replaces everything else with a color or with transparency.

  1. Open the image. In your Shopify admin, open the product image and click its thumbnail to open the file editor.
  2. Choose Color background. Shopify detects the product. Use Choose subject if it missed an edge.
  3. Pick the color. Choose a swatch, enter your brand's color code, or go transparent.
  4. Save as new. Keep the original, and save transparent versions as PNG, the only format that keeps transparency.

At the time of writing, Shopify offers media generation on all plans at no additional cost for a limited time.

Lifestyle scene: describe the surface, the light and the size

The same editor has a Generate option that changes the scene from a short text prompt. Shopify's own advice is to use short, comma-separated keywords rather than a conversation, to state the product's real size, and to say what it rests on so it doesn't float.

Lifestyle scene keywords
[PRODUCT WITH ITS REAL SIZE], [WHAT IT RESTS ON], [ROOM OR PLACE], [LIGHT AND TIME OF DAY], [CAMERA ANGLE]

If you think in sentences, let Claude translate for you:

  1. You:

Turn this into short keywords for Shopify's image generator: "I want my mug on a nice table in a cozy kitchen in the morning"

  2. Claude:

Try: "350 ml speckled ceramic mug, resting on a linen napkin, sunny breakfast table, soft morning window light, three-quarter view at table height"

For more scene variety, Shopify's free Tinker app has ready-made Product Studio Shot, Product Lifestyle Shot and Product Editorial Shot tools on your phone. Higgsfield's Marketing Studio does the same at larger scale, with Product Shots templates in Studio, Lifestyle and With Model formats.

In hand or on model

Model shots answer the questions a buyer asks in a store: how big is it, how does it fit, how does it look on someone like me. Higgsfield's With Model format and Tinker's Virtual Try-on Generator both start from your product image.

If you want the same model across the whole catalog, train one consistent AI character first. The Higgsfield tutorial shows how to build one with Soul ID.

Detail shots: keep these real

Close-ups are where buyers check quality, so they must show the real thing. Shoot them with your phone in good light and use AI only to clean the background or straighten the crop.

From phone photo to product page

Here is the whole workflow in order. Each step has a check, so a bad image never reaches your store.

From phone photo to product page
  1. Shoot

Master photos of every product and variant

  2. Clean

A packshot on a plain background

  3. Stage

Lifestyle and in-hand scenes around the real product

  4. Check

Color, size, label and edges against the real item

  5. Size

Square, high resolution, under 20 MB

  6. Publish

Upload with alt text and AI metadata intact

Shopify accepts most image formats, recommends PNG first and JPEG second, and asks for the same aspect ratio across products so your collection grid lines up.

Shopify product image specs
2048 x 2048

pixels, the square size that usually displays best

20 MB

maximum file size per image

5000 x 5000

pixels or 25 megapixels, the largest size accepted

Product photos are advertising, so the usual rules apply in full. Run every AI image past these points.

  • Truthful images. The FTC's basic rule is that advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive, and it judges an ad by its words and its pictures (FTC advertising FAQs). A lifestyle scene is fine; a product in a color you don't sell is not.
  • Google Shopping. Google Merchant Center requires images made with generative AI to carry metadata that says so, such as the IPTC DigitalSourceType tag, and tells you not to strip it. Your main image must also show the exact item for sale (Google Merchant Center image rules).
  • People. A recognizable person needs to have agreed to appear in your ads, whether you photographed them or an AI tool recreated them.
  • Copyright. The US Copyright Office concluded in January 2025 that purely AI-generated material is not protected and that prompts alone are not enough control. Your own photos, edits and creative arrangement still can be (Copyright Office report).

For selling with these images, the AI UGC ads guide shows how to turn product shots into short video ads. If your store itself still needs work, building a website with AI covers the site side.

What to do next

Pick your best-selling product and shoot its master photos this week with a phone and a window. Make one packshot and two lifestyle scenes from them, run the checklist, and swap them into the product page. If you want to go further, the Creators course covers product photos, realistic model shots and keeping the product consistent across a whole campaign.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my product look different in AI photos?

Most generators redraw the whole image, including your label, logo and fine texture. Use tools that edit around your original pixels instead of regenerating the product, and for packaging text, Higgsfield's help center points to GPT Image for readable text and accurate color.

Can I remove the invisible watermark Shopify adds to AI images?

No. Shopify applies an invisible watermark to every image made with its media generation tool and says it can't be removed, but it also says the watermark doesn't restrict commercial use.

Can I turn my product photos into a product video?

Yes. Shopify's free Tinker app includes tools such as Product Morph Video and Social Media Ad Generator, and Higgsfield's Marketing Studio has a Motion category with templates such as Hypermotion and 2D Product Motion.

Can AI create product photos without any photo of the product?

It can draw something similar from a description, but it won't be your product. Keep text-only renders for early concepts or pre-launch tests, label them as renderings, and switch to real-photo-based images before you sell.

Will AI product photos increase my sales?

Nobody can promise that, and there is no neutral public benchmark that settles it. Test it yourself: change the images on a few products, keep price and copy the same, and compare add-to-cart rates over the same period.
