Best AI Courses in 2026: 12 Online Picks for Beginners

We checked all 12 on their own pages on October 26, 2026, added up the real hours from each course list and noted when each was last updated, because AI courses go stale fast.

By Yotam DahanUpdated 13 min readChoosing an AI course

Best AI courses checked for real hours: Google AI Essentials on Coursera says 4 hours to complete, while its own list of five courses adds up to 8 hours

The best AI courses in 2026 for most beginners are Google AI Essentials if you want a certificate (five short courses, $49 a month on Coursera), Andrew Ng's Generative AI for Everyone if you want to understand AI for free (updated October 8, 2026), and Elements of AI if you want a free university course with a free certificate. If you already write Python, Harvard's CS50 AI is the deep free option, and if you need a teacher, pick a live Maven cohort.

How we picked and checked these AI courses

Every AI course online can call itself the best, so we checked the same four things for each one on its official page on October 26, 2026, and kept only courses where we could verify them:

The four numbers we checked

Real hours

The sum of the course list, not the headline. Two of Google's pages state fewer hours than their own lessons add up to.

Last update

AI tools change every few months. A course that teaches last year's screens costs you time.

Hands-on share

Exercises, labs and projects, against video you only watch.

Price to finish

What you pay if it takes you twice as long as planned, which is what usually happens with monthly plans.

Our own courses are not ranked here. We sell four AI courses for people who don't code, and a list that puts its author first is not a fair comparison, so they sit in a separate, labelled section at the end.

Best AI courses for beginners (no coding)

1. Google AI Essentials

Five short Google courses on Coursera: Introduction to AI, Maximize Productivity With AI Tools, Discover the Art of Prompting, Use AI Responsibly and Stay Ahead of the AI Curve. It is the most popular course here, with 2,048,099 learners enrolled and a 4.8 rating from 26,006 reviews when we checked. Coursera charges $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial (course page).

  • Choose it if you want a certificate an employer or client recognizes, with the least time.
  • Skip it if you already use an AI assistant every day; most of it will be familiar. Our Google AI Essentials review goes through it lesson by lesson.

2. Generative AI for Everyone

Andrew Ng's beginner course on how generative AI works, what it can and can't do, and how to prompt it: 32 video lessons, 5 hours 1 minute, 2 code examples you can skip and 6 graded assignments for Pro members. It is the freshest course on this list: the page shows an update on October 8, 2026.

Beginner level, 5 hours 1 minute, updated October 8, 2026. DeepLearning.AI, October 26, 2026.

DeepLearning.AI's free plan includes every course video; the certificate and graded work need Pro, at $50 a month or $300 a year (membership page).

  • Choose it if you want to understand AI before you pay anyone.
  • Skip it if you need hands-on practice in a specific tool; it explains more than it drills.

3. Elements of AI

The University of Helsinki's free course, built with MinnaLearn and taken by more than 2 million people in over 170 countries. Introduction to AI has six chapters, from "What is AI?" to the societal implications, with 25 exercises and no math or programming required. You need to complete at least 90% of the exercises and get half of them right to pass, and the certificate is free (FAQ). The Global, Finnish and Swedish versions can also earn 2 ECTS credits through the University of Helsinki Open University.

  • Choose it if you want a free certificate that proves you did exercises, not just watched.
  • Skip it if you want to use AI tools at work this week; it teaches concepts such as probability and neural networks, not ChatGPT.

4. OpenAI Academy: Apply AI at Work

OpenAI's own three free courses, AI Foundations (about 70 minutes), Applied AI Foundations (80) and Agents and Workflows (90), run on any ChatGPT account. Each ends with an assessment, and a score of 80% earns a badge you can verify. Our guide to the best ChatGPT courses covers the badge rules and the paid alternatives.

  • Choose it if ChatGPT is the tool you will actually use.
  • Skip it if you want a tool-neutral introduction.

5. Microsoft Learn: Introduction to AI concepts

The fastest free overview: one Microsoft Learn module of 40 minutes in 10 units, covering generative AI and agents, language, speech, computer vision and responsible AI, with a short hands-on exercise and a module assessment (module page).

  • Choose it if you want the vocabulary before a longer course.
  • Skip it if you expect depth; it is a primer.

Best AI courses with a certificate employers recognize

6. Google AI Professional Certificate

Google's deeper program: eight courses, from AI fundamentals to deploying a simple app, with hands-on activities in Google's tools. The page says 8 hours; its course list adds up to 13. It is rated 4.8 from 12,356 reviews, carries an ACE recommendation for college credit and was marked as updated in August 2026 (course page). US businesses with 500 employees or fewer can get it free, which our guide to AI courses for business owners explains.

  • Choose it if you want the strongest beginner credential here and will practice in Gemini.
  • Skip it if your work runs on another assistant.

7. AI for Everyone

Andrew Ng's non-technical classic on what AI can do and how AI projects work: about 7 hours in four modules, rated 4.8 from 53,460 reviews by 2,657,230 learners on Coursera (course page). The videos are free on DeepLearning.AI's free plan.

  • Choose it if you manage people or budgets and need the strategy view.
  • Skip it if you want to use the tools; it barely touches them.

8. DataCamp AI Fundamentals

An interactive track of about 9 hours, with no coding, from AI basics to large language models and AI ethics (track page). The AI Fundamentals certification comes with Premium, listed at $14 a month billed yearly; the free plan opens only the first chapter of each course (pricing).

  • Choose it if you learn better by answering questions in the browser than by watching video.
  • Skip it if you want to work on your own tasks; the exercises are DataCamp's.

Best artificial intelligence courses if you can code

9. CS50's Introduction to AI with Python

Harvard's computer science course on how AI works: search, optimization, machine learning, neural networks and large language models, with a Python project every week. It runs 7 weeks at 10 to 30 hours a week, self-paced, and asks for CS50x or a year of Python first (course site).

CS50's Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python on Harvard's site: 7 weeks long, 10 to 30 hours per week, self-paced, intermediate, audit for free or add a verified certificate for $299
Free to audit, $299 for the verified certificate, and an intermediate level that means it. Harvard University, October 26, 2026.

It is the best artificial intelligence course online for people who already code, and it costs nothing unless you want the certificate.

  • Choose it if you code and want to understand AI from the inside.
  • Skip it if you have never programmed; start with course 2 or 3 instead.

10. Microsoft AI for Beginners

A free 12-week curriculum of 24 lessons on GitHub, with notebooks in PyTorch and TensorFlow and 70,300 stars when we checked (curriculum). Despite the name, it expects you to run Python notebooks, and it leaves out business uses of AI on purpose.

  • Choose it if you want a long, free, structured technical course.
  • Skip it if "beginner" for you means no code.

Best online AI classes with a live teacher, and the all-you-can-learn option

11. Maven live cohorts

If the best AI classes for you are the ones with a real teacher, this is where to look: live classes by independent instructors over a few weeks. The three we checked for non-technical learners cost $699 to $995, with 4 to 13 live sessions, and eligible cohorts carry Maven's refund guarantee up to the course midpoint (guarantee).

  • Choose one if you finish things only with deadlines and someone reviewing your work.
  • Skip it if your budget is tight; the topics exist self-paced for less.

12. Coursera Plus

One subscription for more than 10,000 courses, including picks 1, 6 and 7 above: $59 a month after a 7-day trial, or $399 a year with a 14-day refund window (Coursera Plus).

  • Choose it if you plan to take three or more Coursera courses in a year.
  • Skip it if you will take one course; pay for that course alone.

Looking for the best AI training courses for a whole team rather than for yourself? The employee training guide compares team plans and adds a 30-day rollout. Where our own courses fit

We left ai school out of the ranking on purpose, so read this as a disclosure. We sell four short AI courses for people who don't code: Claude Code, building websites with AI, AI content creation and AI automation, all in early access (pre-order). They end with things you build and use, such as a live landing page, an AI video ad or an agent that handles your invoices, rather than with an accredited certificate.

Pick from the numbered list instead if you need a recognized certificate (1 or 6), a free start (2 to 5) or a live teacher (11). Pick ours if you want to build those projects for your own business; the four courses and their syllabus are on one page.

Quick check0 of 2 correct

You want a free certificate that shows you did real exercises, not only watched videos. Which course fits?

Google AI Essentials' page says 4 hours. How long do its five courses add up to?

What to do next

Pick one course from the table by the result you want, not three, and put the first two sessions in your calendar before you enroll. If you choose a monthly plan, start it on a week you can give it four evenings, so one month covers it. When you finish, take one task from your own work and redo it with what you learned; that is the step most courses leave to you, and the one that makes the course worth it.

AI course comparison sheet and four-week finish plan

A fill-in sheet to compare up to three AI courses on the four numbers that matter, the warning signs to check before paying, and a four-week plan to actually finish.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI course for beginners?

Andrew Ng's Generative AI for Everyone if you want to understand AI first: about 5 hours of video, free to watch and updated October 8, 2026. Google AI Essentials if you want a certificate: five short courses on Coursera, $49 a month after a 7-day trial.

Are there free AI courses with a certificate?

Yes. Elements of AI gives a free certificate when you complete at least 90% of its exercises and get half of them right, and OpenAI Academy gives a free badge for each course you pass with 80%. Most other free options let you watch for free but charge for the certificate.

How long does an online AI course take?

For a beginner, between 40 minutes and about 13 hours: Microsoft's Introduction to AI concepts is a 40-minute module, Google AI Essentials adds up to 8 hours and Google's AI Professional Certificate to 13. Harvard's CS50 AI is different: 7 weeks at 10 to 30 hours a week, for people who already code.

Are artificial intelligence classes at a university better than online AI courses?

They teach something else. University artificial intelligence classes such as Harvard's CS50 AI teach how AI works, in Python; most online AI courses for beginners teach you to use AI tools for work. Pick the university route only if you want to build AI systems, not just use them.

Can an online AI course give me college credit?

A few can. Elements of AI's Introduction to AI earns 2 ECTS credits through the University of Helsinki Open University, Google's AI Professional Certificate carries an ACE credit recommendation, and CS50 AI can be taken for credit through Harvard Extension School.
