Claude Code has no separate price: it comes with every paid Claude plan, from Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed yearly) to Max at $100 or $200 a month, or you pay per token through an Anthropic Console account. Most solo users should start on Pro and move to Max only when they keep hitting limits.

Claude Pro vs Max: what the extra money buys

Anthropic describes Pro as a fit for short coding sprints in small codebases, and Max 5x for everyday use in larger ones, on its Claude Code page. Here is what Max adds:

What Max adds on top of Pro

More usage

5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session, with weekly limits on top.

Higher output limits

Longer outputs on every task.

Priority access

You stay at the front of the line at high-traffic times.

Monthly API credits

$100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x, for building on the Claude Platform.

Fable within your limits

Fable can use up to half of your weekly limits. On Pro, Fable bills to usage credits instead.

What Max doesn't change is the model. Opus 5.5 is the default on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise alike, according to Anthropic's model configuration docs.

So the honest test is simple: if Pro's limits rarely stop you, Max buys you little. If they stop you several times a week, Max is the fix.

Pay as you go: API pricing

Log in to Claude Code with a Claude Console account and you pay per token instead of a monthly fee. These are the list prices per million tokens:

ModelInputOutputCache read
Fable 5.1$10$50$0.25
Opus 5.5$4$20$0.20
Sonnet 5.5$2$10$0.10
Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K tokens)$0.10$0.50$0.01

Haiku 5.5 costs more on prompts over 100K tokens: $0.50 in and $2.50 out. The full rate card, including batch discounts, is on Anthropic's pricing docs.

How much does that come to in practice? Anthropic publishes figures from its business customers:

Claude Code on API billing, across enterprise deployments
$13

average cost per developer per active day

$150 to $250

typical cost per developer per month

90%

of users stay under $30 per active day

From Anthropic's cost documentation. Your own costs depend on the model, the size of the project and your habits.

How usage limits shape the bill

Every plan's usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly limits. Claude chat on the web, desktop and phone draws from the same pool as Claude Code.

When you hit a limit you have three choices:

  • Wait. The window resets, and Claude Code tells you when.
  • Turn on usage credits. Keep working at standard API rates, with a monthly spend cap if you set one.
  • Move up a plan. Max multiplies Pro's usage by 5 or 20.

Type /usage in Claude Code to see where you stand. Our guide to Claude Code usage limits explains what counts against them and how to make them last.

Which plan fits which user

How to choose without overpaying
  1. Start on Pro

Use it for two normal weeks of real work

  2. Check /usage

Note how often the five-hour or weekly limit stopped you

  3. Limits weekly?

Move to Max 5x, or add usage credits if it only happens now and then

  4. Still short?

Max 20x for hands-on work, or API billing for scripts

Here is what that looks like for five common situations, using October 2026 prices:

Who you arePlanWhat you pay
A business owner trying Claude Code on weekendsPro, billed yearly$200 a year, about $17 a month
A freelancer building client sites every dayMax 5x$100 a month
A power user running several agents for hoursMax 20x$200 a month
A team of five light users5 Team Standard seats, yearly5 x $20 = $100 a month
A team of five with one heavy coder4 Standard seats and 1 Premium, yearly4 x $20 + $100 = $180 a month

Team plan or separate Pro plans?

For two or more people, a Team seat costs a little more than Pro: $20 a month billed yearly, against about $17 for Pro billed yearly. The difference buys things a business usually needs:

  • Central billing and admin. One invoice, one place to add or remove people.
  • Single sign-on and connector controls. Admins decide which tools Claude can reach.
  • No training by default. Claude doesn't train on your team's content unless you change that.
  • Mixed seats. Give a Premium seat only to the person who codes all day.

A worked API example

For scripts, run the numbers per job. Say a nightly script sends Sonnet 5.5 about 50,000 input tokens and gets 5,000 tokens back (hypothetical figures for illustration):

  • Input: 0.05 million x $2 = $0.10
  • Output: 0.005 million x $10 = $0.05
  • Per run: $0.15, or about $4.50 for 30 nights

That is cheaper than any plan, which is why API billing suits small automations. Hands-on daily work reads far more tokens, which is where plans usually win.

If you're unsure which side of that line you're on, let Claude read your own numbers:

Ask Claude which plan fits you
Here is my /usage breakdown for the last 7 days: [PASTE IT HERE]. I'm on [YOUR PLAN] and I mostly use Claude Code for [YOUR MAIN TASKS]. Based on how often I hit limits and what used the most, should I stay, move up a plan, or turn on usage credits? Explain it in plain English.

Three ways to pay less

  • Pay yearly for Pro. $200 a year instead of $240.
  • Match the model to the job. Use /model to switch to Sonnet 5.5 or Haiku 5.5 for simple tasks.
  • Start fresh between tasks. /clear empties the context, so Claude stops re-reading an old conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund on Claude Pro or Max?

Payments are generally non-refundable, except where Anthropic's consumer terms or local law say otherwise. Customers in the EEA and UK can request a refund in the app within their 14-day withdrawal period, and App Store subscriptions are refunded through Apple.

What happens if I upgrade from Pro to Max in the middle of a month?

Upgrades take effect right away, and unused time on your current plan is credited toward the new one. Downgrades take effect at the end of your billing period.

Do Claude's prices include tax?

No. Claude's pricing page says the prices shown don't include applicable tax, so your final bill can be higher depending on where you live.

How do I cancel my Claude subscription?

On the web or desktop app, go to Settings, then Billing, and click Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date. Your plan stays active until the end of the billing period, and App Store or Google Play subscriptions are cancelled in those stores.

Can my whole team share one Max plan?

No. Pro and Max are individual plans, and Anthropic says their usage limits assume ordinary individual use. Teams of 2 to 150 people should use the Team plan, which adds central billing and admin controls.
