Instagram DM automation is software that answers comments and direct messages for you through Meta's official Instagram API. It only works on professional accounts, only after the person reaches out first, and inside strict windows: 24 hours to keep replying after someone messages you, and 7 days to send one private reply to a comment.

How Instagram DM automation works

Every automation follows the same path. Here is the most popular pattern, comment-to-DM, where a post invites people to comment a keyword to get something:

Comment-to-DM, step by step
  1. Comment

A follower comments your keyword on a post or reel

  2. Webhook

Meta notifies your tool about the new comment

  3. Private reply

Your tool sends one DM to the commenter

  4. They reply

Their answer opens a 24-hour conversation window

  5. Deliver

The link, offer or next question goes out

  6. Hand off

A person takes over when needed

Here is what that looks like from the follower's side:

A comment-to-DM conversation
  1. AI:

Hi! Thanks for commenting on the post. Want the free checklist? Reply YES and I'll send it.

  2. You:

    YES

  3. AI:

Here it is: [link]. Want a copy by email too? Just reply with your address.

  4. You:

    sure, dana@example.com

  5. AI:

Done. If you have a question about your own setup, reply here and someone from our team will answer.

The same pattern starts from other places too: a keyword in a DM, a reply to your story, or a tap on an ad that opens Instagram Direct. To plan the posts that feed these conversations, see the guide to automate social media posts with AI.

The Meta rules every automation must follow

Meta's rules live in three places: the Instagram messaging docs, the private replies docs and the messaging section of its Developer Policies. In plain English:

RuleWhat it means for you
Professional accounts onlyThe API works with business and creator accounts, not personal ones
They message firstYou can only message someone after they have messaged your account
24-hour windowYou have 24 hours to reply after their last message
One private reply per commentYou can send it within 7 days of the comment; more messages only if they answer, within 24 hours of their answer
Ads can stretch the windowAfter someone taps a Click-to-Instagram-Direct ad and messages you, the window can last up to 7 days
Humans get extra timeA reply from a human agent can be tagged to go out after 24 hours
No promotions through tagsMessage tags can't carry offers, discounts or announcements
No spamIncluding failing to deliver what you promised

ManyChat: what you get and what it costs

ManyChat is a dedicated chat automation platform with Instagram at its core. It also covers WhatsApp, Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, SMS and email, and it handles comment-to-DM flows out of the box.

PlanBilled monthlyBilled annually, per monthActive contacts a month
Free$0$025
Essential$17$14250
Pro (adds AI)$39$292,500
Business$99$697,500

An active contact is one real person you interact with in a month, however many messages you exchange. Above your allowance you pay per extra contact, and ManyChat says the final price depends on your billing country (ManyChat pricing).

Alternatives, including building your own

Three ways to automate Instagram DMs

ManyChat

Templates, a visual builder and AI from the Pro plan. Quick to launch, and the bill grows with active contacts.

Chatfuel

An AI chatbot platform for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook that replies to post and Reels comments. Business is $20 a month, or $18 billed annually.

Your own build

A small app on Meta's API, built with Claude Code or a developer. Flat running costs and full control, but the Meta app, server and upkeep are yours.

Chatfuel's prices come from its pricing page, checked October 18, 2026. For a wider view of automation platforms, see the best AI automation tools, and for where DM automation fits among other quick wins, see AI automation for small business.

Building your own replacement: what it took

I replaced ManyChat for my own accounts with a small app I built with Claude Code. When someone comments a keyword, it posts a short public reply, sends a private DM, checks whether they follow the account before sharing the link, and drops every conversation into one inbox where a person can answer.

Beyond the app itself, every do-it-yourself build needs the same plumbing:

  1. A Meta app with the Instagram permissions for basic profile access, messages and comments.
  2. Webhooks to a public HTTPS address, so Meta can deliver every comment and message to you.
  3. A server that never sleeps. Mine first ran on my own computer and only worked while it was awake, so I moved it to a small always-on cloud server. I chose that over serverless hosting because delayed follow-ups run in the background.
  4. The right access level. Standard Access covers accounts with a role on your app. Serving anyone else's account needs Advanced Access, which requires Business Verification and can require App Review.
  5. Basic security. Check Meta's signature on every webhook, put the dashboard behind a strong password and rate-limit anything public.

Even though the app only serves my own accounts, I prepared an App Review submission for Advanced Access, which meant writing an explanation and recording a screencast for each permission. Meta's docs note that some features may not work properly until an app has Advanced Access.

Build your own if you are comfortable running a server (or letting Claude Code do the heavy lifting), your contact count is high, or you need flows no builder supports. Otherwise, pay for a tool and spend the time on your content.

If most of your DMs are customer questions rather than campaign replies, an AI receptionist with a human handoff may fit better than a keyword flow.

What to do next

Pick one post this week and end it with a clear keyword offer for something genuinely useful. Start on ManyChat's free plan, which covers 25 active contacts a month, so you can see the response before you pay.

If interest outgrows the free plan, compare the paid plans with a do-it-yourself build using the table above. Our AI automation course is in early access and covers lead capture flows like this one.

Comment-to-DM scripts and a Meta rules checklist

Six ready-to-adapt DM messages for a keyword campaign, from the first reply to the human handoff, plus a pre-launch checklist that keeps you within Meta's rules.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Facebook Page to automate Instagram DMs?

Not necessarily. Meta's Instagram API with Instagram Login works without a Facebook Page; only the setup that goes through Facebook Login needs your Instagram account connected to a Page.

Can I use AI to write the DM replies?

Yes. ManyChat's Pro plan and Chatfuel both include AI features, and a custom build can call any model you like. Keep the AI answering from your own information, and make it easy to reach a person.

What happens if someone messages me after the 24-hour window has closed?

Their new message opens a fresh 24-hour window, so your automation can reply again. The window starts over every time the person interacts with your account.

Are ManyChat and Chatfuel official Meta partners?

ManyChat describes itself as an Official Meta Business Partner, and Chatfuel lists itself as an Official Meta Partner. Either way, both work through Meta's official API, so the same messaging rules apply to them as to everyone else.
