Both are strong general assistants, and both cost $20 a month at their main paid tier, so pick by the work you do most. Choose Claude if your days are full of long documents, careful writing and tasks you want an agent like Claude Code to do on your files. Choose ChatGPT if you want built-in image generation, a cheaper $8 entry plan and a broad set of extras in one app.

The plans side by side

Plan levelClaudeChatGPT
Free$0$0
Cheapest paidPro, $20 a month, or $200 a yearGo, $8 a month (may include ads)
Main paid planPro, $20 a monthPlus, $20 a month
Power usersMax, $100 or $200 a monthPro, $100, $200 or $500 a month
Small teamsTeam, $25 per seat a month, or $20 billed yearlyBusiness, $25 per user a month, or $20 billed yearly, 2+ users
Large companiesEnterprise, $20 per seat plus usage, 20-seat minimumEnterprise, priced by sales

For a business, the seat price is what you will actually compare:

Price per person per month in USD, business plans
  • Claude Team Standard, yearly$20
  • ChatGPT Business, yearly$20
  • Claude Team Standard, monthly$25
  • ChatGPT Business, monthly$25
  • Claude Team Premium, yearly$100

From Claude's pricing page and OpenAI's Codex pricing page, which lists ChatGPT plans in US dollars. Claude Premium seats get 5x a Standard seat's usage.

Writing

There is no neutral, official scoreboard for writing quality, and your brand voice matters more than any benchmark. Both let you save standing instructions about tone, and both organize ongoing work into projects: Claude's Free plan allows up to five, while ChatGPT includes projects from Plus.

The fastest way to compare is one brief, pasted into both:

Paste the same brief into both
Write a 150-word email to [WHO IT IS FOR] announcing [WHAT IS NEW]. Tone: [THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND]. End with one clear call to action: [THE ACTION]. Never use these words: [WORDS YOU AVOID].

Judge the two drafts on how little you had to change, not on which one sounds more impressive.

Analysis and long documents

The biggest measurable gap is how much text fits in one conversation:

Context window, the text each can work with at once
1M

tokens on current Claude models, depending on model and plan

256K

tokens on ChatGPT Plus with reasoning models

400K

tokens on ChatGPT Pro with reasoning models

From Claude's pricing page and ChatGPT's pricing page. A token is a small chunk of text, usually part of a word.

In practice, that favors Claude for reading a long contract, a year of reports or a big spreadsheet export in one go. Both can run code on files you upload to calculate, chart and summarize, and both plug into office tools: Claude for Microsoft 365 from Pro, and ChatGPT's Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions.

Agents and coding

Both now sell more than a chat window. Each plan includes agents that take actions, not just answers:

The agents behind each subscription

Claude Code

Anthropic's agent that edits real files on your computer and runs commands. Included from Pro.

Claude in Chrome

Claude working in your browser, from Pro.

Codex

OpenAI's coding agent. Limited on Free and Go, expanded from Plus.

ChatGPT Work

OpenAI's agent for longer, multi-step tasks. Limited on the desktop app for Free and Go, on desktop, web and mobile from Plus.

If coding agents are the deciding factor, our Codex vs Claude Code comparison puts them through the same task. New to the idea? Start with what Claude Code is.

Files, images and voice

The image row is the clearest split. ChatGPT makes pictures for posts and ads. Claude Design builds designed layouts, one-pagers and slides that export to PDF and PowerPoint.

Privacy settings that matter for a business

On personal plans, both companies may use your chats to improve their models unless you switch it off. Here is where the switches live.

Claude (Free, Pro and Max)

  1. Open Settings. Click your name, then Settings.
  2. Open Privacy. It is in the settings menu.
  3. Switch off "Help improve our AI models". New chats and coding sessions won't be used for future training, as Anthropic's privacy settings article explains.

Deleted chats leave Anthropic's back-end systems within 30 days, and incognito chats are never used for training.

ChatGPT (Free, Go, Plus and Pro)

  1. Open Settings. From your account menu.
  2. Open Data controls.
  3. Turn off "Improve the model for everyone". It also covers your Codex tasks, per OpenAI's data controls page.

Temporary chats are never used for training, though OpenAI may keep them for up to 30 days for safety.

Before anyone on your team pastes client material into either assistant:
