The best AI course for a business owner depends on the result you want. For a recognized certificate, Google's AI Professional Certificate is the strongest pick, and it is free for eligible US small businesses that enroll by December 15, 2026. For live feedback, a Maven cohort earns its higher price; for a free start, Anthropic's AI Fluency for Small Businesses; and for building real things such as a website, AI content or an AI agent, the $7 ai school courses.

How we compared them

Every option below was checked on its own official page on October 18, 2026, for price, time, format and certificate. We judged each one on a single question: what can a business owner who doesn't code do after finishing it?

ai school is our own course, and it is on this list. Where another option is the better fit for you, the comparison says so.

The four formats you will run into

Self-paced subscription

Coursera and DataCamp. Cheap if you finish quickly, expensive if you don't.

Free vendor course

Anthropic Academy and Google's free offers. Good basics, built around the vendor's own tools.

Live cohort

Maven. A teacher, a schedule and feedback, at a much higher price.

Community

Skool groups. Peers, calls and templates, with quality that depends on the owner.

From the Google AI Essentials, Professional Certificate and Coursera Plus pages and the community's Skool page, checked October 18, 2026.

The picks, one by one

Google AI Professional Certificate

Google's deeper program, launched on Coursera in February 2026 with seven courses and now listed with eight, covering research, writing, content, data analysis and building simple apps with AI, plus 20 or more hands-on activities. The certificate is recommended by ACE for college credit at participating US schools (Coursera listing).

  • Choose it if you want the strongest credential on this list.
  • Skip it if you want to go deep on a tool other than Google's. The examples center on Gemini and Workspace, although Google says any browser-based AI tool works for the labs.

Google AI Essentials

Five beginner courses on AI basics, productivity, prompting, responsible use and keeping up, about 8 hours in total. Our Google AI Essentials review compares it with the Professional Certificate in detail.

  • Choose it if you have barely used AI and want the easiest structured start.
  • Skip it if you already use an assistant every day.

AI For Everyone, by DeepLearning.AI on Coursera

Andrew Ng's non-technical course: 4 modules and about 7 hours on what AI can do, how AI projects work and how to build an AI strategy for a company (course page).

  • Choose it if you are deciding where AI fits in your business before you invest in tools or people.
  • Skip it if you want hands-on practice. It is about understanding, not doing.

DataCamp AI Fundamentals

A track of five short courses, from AI at work to large language models and AI ethics, about 9 hours with no coding (track page). Premium was listed at $14 a month billed annually as a special price when we checked, and it includes the AI Fundamentals certification (DataCamp pricing).

  • Choose it if you want concepts explained clearly in an interactive format.
  • Skip it if you want to apply AI to your own business tasks right away.

Anthropic Academy: AI Fluency for Small Businesses

A free course for small business teams on delegating to AI, describing tasks well, judging the output and using AI transparently, with a certificate at the end. Anthropic recommends taking its free AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations course first (course page).

  • Choose it if you want a free, solid framework for your whole team.
  • Skip it if you need step-by-step builds. It teaches a way of working, not projects.

Maven live cohorts

Maven hosts live courses run by independent instructors. Three we checked that target non-technical owners and operators:

CoursePriceFormat
Claude for Non-Technical Operators: Advanced Certification$699Four live sessions, about 8 hours, December 1 to 15, 2026
AI Accelerator for Executives and Entrepreneurs$800 live, $600 self-pacedFour 90-minute sessions, next cohort December 5, 2026
Your AI C-Suite: Build AI Agents that run your Business with Claude Cowork$99513 live sessions, November 8 to December 20, 2026

All three showed the Maven Guarantee badge, which on eligible cohorts allows a full refund through the course midpoint, or through week 2 for courses of four weeks or more (Maven's guarantee).

  • Choose a cohort if you need deadlines and someone reviewing your work.
  • Skip it if your budget is tight. The same topics exist in cheaper self-paced form, just without the feedback.

Skool AI communities

Skool hosts paid and free communities run by creators. One large example is AI Automation Society by Nate Herk: the main group is free, and its paid tier, AI Automation Society Plus, costs $129 a month with weekly Q&As and courses (Skool page). Both are built around learning to sell AI automation services, and monthly payments for the paid tier are final, according to its page.

  • Choose one if you want peers and you plan to offer AI services to clients.
  • Skip it if you want structured lessons for your own business. Communities vary widely, and a community certificate is not a formal credential.

ai school

Four short courses for people who don't code, $7 each or $21 for all four, paid once with lifetime access. The Claude Code course has 35 lessons, about six hours of video, and ends with a live landing page, a finished AI video and an agent that sends invoices to your accountant. Builders covers websites and Shopify stores in 40 lessons, Creators covers AI images, video ads and voice in 30 lessons, and Autopilot, on AI automation, is still in early access.

  • Choose it if you want to build things yourself, on a small budget.
  • Pick something else if you need a recognized certificate (Google), live feedback (Maven) or a free start (Anthropic).

Self-paced, live cohort or community, based on how you finish things

  3. Check time and price

  4. Run the test

The five questions in our guide to whether AI courses are worth it

The last step matters most. Before you pay, run the five-question test in are AI courses worth it; it also lists the red flags that the FTC warns about. For narrower picks, see our roundups of Claude Code courses and AI automation courses, and for a wider plan, AI for small business.

Quick check0 of 2 correct

You run a US company with 30 employees and want a recognized AI certificate at no cost. What fits best?

Which format gives you feedback on your own work?

What to do next

Write down the one result you want from AI in the next 30 days, then use the decision table to pick a single course, not three. If your business qualifies for Google's free offer, apply this week, because the deadline is December 15, 2026. If your result is something you want to build, the four ai school courses cover Claude Code, websites and AI content for $21 in total, with the automation course in early access.

Frequently asked questions

Should I learn AI myself first or train my employees?

Learn the basics yourself first, so you can judge what your team actually needs and spot weak training. Then train the people closest to the repetitive work. Team plans exist on most platforms; DataCamp, for example, lists $14 per user a month billed annually.

How are AI courses for business owners different from courses for developers?

Business courses teach you to use AI tools, judge their output and apply them to your workflows. Developer courses teach APIs, Python and building models. If a course lists Python as a prerequisite, it is not aimed at you.

Do I need a paid AI subscription to take these courses?

Some require one. The Claude-based Maven cohorts we checked require a paid Claude plan, and so does the ai school Claude Code course, where Pro is enough to start. Google says any browser-based AI tool works for its Professional Certificate labs.

Are there AI courses for my specific industry?

A few providers offer role versions. Anthropic Academy, for example, has free AI Fluency courses for small businesses, nonprofits, educators and creative work. For industry workflows, guides written for your role are often more useful than a general course.
