Choose Claude Code if you want to hand an AI agent a whole job, like building a landing page or cleaning up a folder of files, and then review what it did. Choose Cursor if you write code yourself and want an AI-first code editor with autocomplete and an agent built in. Price now separates them too: since October 2026 Cursor is sold inside The X Subscription, where Claude models cost extra per token, while a $20 Claude Pro plan includes Claude Code running Opus 5.5 by default.

How Claude Code works
You open a folder, describe the result you want in plain English, and Claude Code does the work and reports back. Our plain-English explainer of what Claude Code is covers what it can touch on your computer.
Describe it
You say what you want, in plain English, inside your project folder
Plan
In plan mode, Claude reads your files and proposes steps before changing anything
Build
It edits files and runs commands, within the permission mode you chose
Check or rewind
You test the result, and /rewind undoes any turn you don't like
Three features shape how it feels day to day:
- Permission modes. Manual mode asks before edits and commands. From version 2.1.283, auto mode is the starting mode in the terminal and VS Code, and a second model reviews actions before they run. Shift+Tab switches modes.
- Checkpoints. Every prompt creates a checkpoint. Run
/rewind, or press Esc twice, to restore the code, the conversation or both, without knowing Git. - Standing instructions. A CLAUDE.md file holds your project rules. Skills, MCP servers and scheduled routines extend it over time.
The desktop app has a Code tab, so you can do all of this without a terminal. Anthropic's Claude Code overview lists every surface.
How Cursor works
Cursor is an editor first. You see the file tree, the code and every change side by side, with three AI layers on top:
- Tab. As you type, Cursor suggests the next lines in gray. Press Tab to accept, and it predicts where your next edit should go.
- Agent. Open it with Cmd+I on Mac or Ctrl+I on Windows, describe a change and review the diff. Shift+Tab in the agent box switches to Plan Mode.
- Cloud agents and Bugbot. On Premium and above, agents run on their own machines in parallel, and Bugbot reviews pull requests.
Which models you get depends on the plan. Plus covers Cursor's own models only (Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5) at fixed settings.
Premium and above add Claude, GPT and Gemini, billed separately at each model's API list price. Your included usage is a weekly pool shared with the Grok apps, as Cursor's models and pricing docs explain.
Pricing compared (checked October 18, 2026)
Cursor's prices changed on October 12, 2026, when xAI launched The X Subscription, one plan for Grok, Cursor and X Premium. Here is how the monthly prices line up:
From Claude's pricing page and Cursor's models and pricing docs. Claude Pro is $17 a month billed yearly.
What each Cursor tier includes:
| Cursor plan | Monthly | Yearly | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited agent and chat requests | |
| Plus | $8 | $80 | Cursor's own models only, base usage |
| Premium | $30 | $300 | 4x Plus usage, cloud agents, Bugbot, third-party models at API price |
| Super | $100 | $1,000 | 15x Plus usage, priority access at peak times |
| Ultra | $200 | $2,000 | 50x Plus usage, earliest access to new models |
| Teams | $30, $100 or $200 per seat | Seats match Premium, Super or Ultra |
Claude Code has no price of its own. It comes with every paid Claude plan:
| Claude plan | Monthly | Yearly | Claude Code usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 | $200 | At least 5x the Free plan per five-hour session |
| Max 5x | $100 | Monthly only | 5x Pro |
| Max 20x | $200 | Monthly only | 20x Pro |
| Team, Standard seat | $25 | $20 per month | More than Pro |
| Team, Premium seat | $125 | $100 per month | 5x a Standard seat |
The detail that changes the math
If Claude is the main reason you would pick Cursor, you pay twice: once for the Cursor tier, then per token for every Claude request.
per million input tokens on Opus 5.5
per million output tokens on Opus 5.5
average Claude Code spend per developer per active day at API rates
Model prices from Claude's pricing page. The daily average comes from Anthropic's cost documentation and covers enterprise deployments.
Agents re-read your files many times during one task, so tokens add up fast. On a Claude plan, the same work counts against your plan's limits instead of a meter, and you only pay per token if you opt in to usage credits.
What each one does best
Cursor is the better tool when
- You type code yourself. You want suggestions as you type, while Claude Code is built around whole tasks.
- You review in an editor. You like checking every change inside a full editor, file by file.
- You want many model makers. You want Grok, GPT, Gemini and Claude in one place, and you accept per-token pricing for the outside ones.
- Your team lives in one product. Cloud agents, pull request reviews and code hosting sit inside the editor. Claude Code offers cloud sessions and GitHub reviews too, but they run on the web and in GitHub rather than in one editor.
Claude Code is the better tool when
- You don't want to read code. The desktop app is a conversation with visual diffs, not an editor.
- The task is bigger than one file. Plan it, build it, run it, fix what breaks, and repeat until it works.
- The work isn't code. Sorting files, building a spreadsheet from a folder of PDFs and drafting documents all work.
- You want predictable costs. Claude's strongest models come at a fixed monthly price.
- You want a safety net. Checkpoints and
/rewindundo mistakes without Git.
Which is easier for a non-developer?
Both expect you to check the result. The difference is what sits in front of you: Cursor puts code front and center, while Claude Code's desktop app puts the conversation first, with the changes a click away. A first session tends to sound like this:
- You:
Make a one-page site for my bakery with opening hours and a contact form.
- Claude Code:
I'll plan this first: one index.html page with a header, an opening hours section and a contact form, plus a small styles file. Should I go ahead?
- You:
Yes, and use warm colors.
- Claude Code:
Done. Open index.html in your browser to check it. Want the form to send you an email next?

| If this sounds like you | Pick |
|---|---|
| I have never coded and want a website, a tool or an automation | Claude Code |
| I code every day and want to type less | Cursor |
| I want Claude's best models at a fixed monthly price | Claude Code on Pro or Max |
| I want to switch between Grok, GPT, Gemini and Claude in one editor | Cursor Premium or higher |
| My budget is under $10 a month | Cursor Plus, knowing it runs Cursor's own models only |
| I already pay for X Premium or SuperGrok | Compare The X Subscription first, since Cursor is now part of it |
| I want to compare more terminal agents | Read our Codex vs Claude Code comparison |
| I want both | Run Claude Code inside Cursor (next section) |
How to use Claude Code inside Cursor
Anthropic publishes a Claude Code extension that installs in Cursor as well as in VS Code:
- Open the Extensions view. In Cursor, press Cmd+Shift+X on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+X on Windows.
- Install the extension. Search for "Claude Code" and install Anthropic's extension.
- Open it. Press Cmd+Shift+P or Ctrl+Shift+P, type "Claude Code" and choose Open in New Tab.
- Sign in. Log in with your Claude account when asked.
You can also type claude in Cursor's built-in terminal if Claude Code is already installed. A common split is Cursor's Tab for small edits and Claude Code for bigger, multi-step jobs.
If you already set up instruction files, MCP servers or skills in Cursor, Claude Code (version 2.1.265 or later) can copy them over. Preview first, then run it again without --dry-run:
/import cursor --dry-runQuick check0 of 2 correct
On Cursor's new plans, how do you pay for Claude models?
Not quite.
Cursor's weekly pool covers its own models. Claude, GPT and Gemini are billed at API list price on Premium ($30) and higher.
What is the cheapest way to get Claude Code?
Not quite.
Claude Code isn't part of Claude's Free plan. It comes with every paid Claude plan, starting with Pro.
What to do next
Pick one task you have been putting off, like a simple landing page, and give it to Claude Code this week. If you write code, try the same task in Cursor's free plan and count how many corrections each one needed.
That count tells you more than any feature table. If Claude Code is the one that clicks, our Claude Code course walks through setup, prompting and real projects, such as a landing page and an invoice agent, at a beginner's pace.

Frequently asked questions
What happened to Cursor Pro and Pro+?
They are now legacy plans. Existing subscribers can keep them as they are, with two monthly usage pools and on-demand usage, while new customers choose from the X Subscription tiers.
Does Cursor use my code to train AI models?
Not when Privacy Mode is on. Cursor says that with Privacy Mode enabled, code data is not used for training by Cursor or its model providers, and admins on team plans can enforce it for everyone.
Do both tools work on Windows?
Yes. Cursor has a native installer for Windows 10 and later, and Claude Code installs natively from PowerShell, with Git for Windows recommended so it can use its Bash tool.
Can I cancel either subscription at any time?
Yes. Both let you cancel whenever you like and keep access until the end of the billing period. Both also ask you to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid the next charge.
