AI SEO Tools (2026): 13 Picks by Job, Priced for One Site
Most small businesses need two free AI SEO tools and at most one paid one. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools cost $0 and now report how often AI answers show your pages; then add one paid tool for the job you do most, from Ubersuggest at $12 a month for keyword research to Frase at $49 for briefs or SE Ranking at $129 for rank and AI prompt tracking. Every price was checked on the vendor's own page on October 27, 2026.

The AI SEO tools worth paying for depend on the SEO job you need done, and for one small-business site the honest answer is usually two free tools plus one paid one. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free and now show when AI answers use your pages; after that, Ubersuggest ($12 a month) covers keyword research, Frase ($49) writes briefs and drafts, and SE Ranking ($129) tracks rankings and AI prompts. Claude or ChatGPT ($20) turns the numbers into a plan, as our demo run below shows.
What an AI SEO tool actually does
An AI SEO tool is search software that uses AI for one of six jobs. AI tools for SEO rarely do all six well at a one-site price, so name your job first.
Keyword research
Finds what people type and how hard it is to rank, like the 1,600 monthly searches for "gluten free bakery austin" in our demo.
Content briefs
Turns keywords and the pages that already rank into an outline: title, headings and questions to answer.
Writing and optimizing
Drafts a page or grades yours against what ranks, with a content score.
Technical audit
Crawls your site for broken links, missing titles, duplicates and redirects.
Rank tracking
Checks where your pages rank for chosen keywords, daily or weekly.
AI visibility
Counts how often AI answers (AI Overviews, Copilot, ChatGPT) show or cite your site.
This page covers search only. For AI tools across the rest of a business, see the best AI tools for small business.

Paying month to month, without a yearly commitment, the cheapest paid plan of each tool lines up like this:
List prices from each pricing page on October 27, 2026; Ubersuggest as shown to our browser in Israel, ChatGPT from OpenAI's pricing docs. Yearly billing lowers Frase to $39, Surfer to $49, SE Ranking to $103.20, Semrush to $117.33 and Claude to $17. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free; Screaming Frog sells only a yearly licence ($279), so it is left out.
Pick AI SEO tools by job
The best AI SEO tools for you are the ones that cover the job you'd do every week. Find that row, and buy the tool in its middle column only when the free way runs out.

The 13 AI SEO tools in detail (checked October 27, 2026)
The two free tools come first, then the research suites, the content tools, the crawler and the two assistants. The order groups tools by job; it is not a ranking.
1. Google Search Console, the free baseline
- Price: free (About Search Console).
- AI SEO features: the Search Generative AI performance reports, live for all websites since August 31, 2026, count how often your URLs appeared in AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover, by page, country, device and date (Google's announcement).
- Best for: the real Google searches that already show your pages, with clicks and position.
- Watch out: the AI impressions are also included in the overall performance report, so don't add the two numbers together.
2. Bing Webmaster Tools, free AI citation data
- Price: free, with keyword research that shows search volumes and an on-demand Site Scan audit (Bing Webmaster Tools).
- AI SEO features: the AI Performance report, in public preview since February 10, 2026, shows total citations, cited pages, citations per URL and the grounding queries (the phrases the AI searched with) across Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partners (Bing's announcement). Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare followed in June.
- Best for: the only free count of AI citations from the search engine itself that we found.
- Watch out: Bing says the data is sampled, and the partner integrations aren't named.
3. Ubersuggest, the cheapest paid plan for one site
- Price: Individual is $12 a month on monthly billing for 1 project, 125 tracked keywords and 150 searches a day; Business is $20 and Enterprise $40, as shown to our browser in Israel (Ubersuggest pricing). Monthly plans start with a one-time 7-day free trial.
- AI SEO features: ChatGPT and Gemini data in keyword research, 2 AI articles a month and 10 AI prompts per project checked monthly, plus a Claude plugin, an MCP server and a ChatGPT app (Ubersuggest integrations).
- Best for: an owner doing keyword research for one site. It's the data source of our demo run below.
- Watch out: the page opens on a lifetime "special offer" with a countdown; compare it with the monthly price before you buy.
4. Semrush, research and audits with AI tracking from Starter up
- Price: the SEO plan is $139 a month, or $117.33 billed annually, for 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily; Starter (SEO + AI Search) is $199, or $165.17 billed annually (Semrush pricing). The free plan gives 10 reports a day and 1 demo project.
- AI SEO features: Starter adds 50 prompts tracked daily, 300 AI visibility reports a day, an AI-ready Site Audit and MCP access. Bought alone, the AI Visibility toolkit is $99 a month per domain for 25 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity, and the Content toolkit is $60 with an SEO Brief Generator.
- Best for: a marketer who wants research, audits and AI tracking in one login.
- Watch out: the $139 SEO plan marks every AI visibility feature as not included.
5. Ahrefs, for competitor and backlink research
- Price: Starter is $29 a month; Lite is $129 a month, or $108 billed annually ($1,290 a year), with 750 tracked keywords and 150 checks on AI prompts (Ahrefs pricing). Ahrefs Free, the renamed Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, costs nothing for sites you verify.
- AI SEO features: tracked AI prompts, API and MCP access on Lite, and an AI Content Helper (1 free doc a month on Ahrefs Free; the Content Kit add-on starts at $99 a month).
- Best for: seeing which pages, keywords and links win for your competitors.
- Watch out: Brand Radar AI, for researching any brand across AI answers, is a separate product from $199 a month.
6. SE Ranking, rank and AI prompt tracking in one plan
- Price: Core is $129 a month, or $103.20 billed annually, with a 14-day free trial and no credit card (SE Ranking pricing).
- AI SEO features: Core tracks 2,000 keywords and 100 AI prompts daily, covers 5 domains in GEO research (GEO: optimizing for AI answers), audits 250,000 pages a month and includes MCP access.
- Best for: tracking Google rankings and AI answers for the price of one content tool.
- Watch out: Core is built for marketing teams, with 10 projects, so a single site uses a fraction of it.
7. Moz Pro, guided SEO for beginners
- Price: Standard is $99 a month, or $79 paid yearly, for 3 tracked sites and 300 keywords. Moz also lists an entry plan at $49 a month for people managing a single website, without its limits on the pricing page (Moz Pro pricing).
- AI SEO features: Standard includes AI Overviews by keyword, 150 tracked prompts across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and 2 AI content briefs a month.
- Best for: beginners who want Moz's metrics and plain next-step tips.
- Watch out: prompt tracking runs weekly, not daily.
8. Surfer, to score drafts as you write
- Price: Discovery is $59 a month, or $49 billed yearly, for 120 documents; Standard is $119, or $99 billed yearly (Surfer pricing).
- AI SEO features: Discovery has Surfy (an AI SEO assistant), a Humanizer and AI SEO optimization guidelines. Standard adds 25 AI prompts tracked weekly and 1-click optimization, and the AI Search Analytics plan alone is $95 a month for 50 prompts refreshed daily.
- Best for: writers who want a live content score while drafting.
- Watch out: Discovery lists no AI visibility tracking.
9. Clearscope, to grade the pages that matter
- Price: Essentials is $129 a month with a 14-day free trial and no contract; Business is $399 (Clearscope pricing).
- AI SEO features: every plan tracks queries in ChatGPT and Gemini and shows query fan-out (the web searches AI platforms run to build an answer). Essentials covers 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 Discoveries and 20 Drafts a month.
- Best for: a team that writes a few important pages a month and wants them graded.
- Watch out: it costs the same as SE Ranking Core, so choose it only if grading drafts is your main job.
10. Frase, for briefs and drafts on one site
- Price: Starter is $49 month to month, or $39 a month billed yearly, for 1 seat and 1 site, with a 7-day free trial and no credit card (Frase pricing).
- AI SEO features: research that ends in a brief, an AI agent that drafts in your brand voice, SEO and GEO scores, AI Visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI, and an MCP server and CLI on every plan. Starter covers 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month.
- Best for: a solo owner who wants briefs and first drafts for one site.
- Watch out: Starter stops at its monthly limits instead of billing extra, so plan around 10 articles.
11. Screaming Frog SEO Spider, for technical audits
- Price: free up to 500 URLs; the paid licence is $279 a year per user (Screaming Frog pricing).
- AI SEO features: the paid licence adds crawling with OpenAI and Gemini, plus Search Console and PageSpeed Insights integrations.
- Best for: finding broken links, redirects, duplicate pages and missing titles.
- Watch out: it's a desktop app, and its URL-by-URL tables take some getting used to.
12. Claude, the assistant that turns data into a plan
- Price: a free plan; Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month on the annual plan ($200 up front), and includes Claude Code (Claude pricing).
- AI SEO features: the free plan lists connecting your apps and tools; with an SEO connector such as Ubersuggest's, Claude pulls real numbers into the chat and writes the brief, as in our run below.
- Best for: turning keyword data into briefs, titles, FAQs and page rewrites. For SEO jobs on files, like a spreadsheet of rankings, see Claude Code for marketers.
- Watch out: without a connected data tool it has no search volumes, so never let it guess them.
13. ChatGPT, for drafts and quick research
- Price: free, Go at $8 and Plus at $20 a month in US dollars (OpenAI's pricing docs); chatgpt.com shows local currency, ₪70 for Plus from Israel.
- AI SEO features: Ubersuggest's ChatGPT app brings its keyword data into the chat.
- Best for: first drafts, title ideas and summaries of what top pages cover. For content beyond search, AI tools for content creators maps one tool to each job.
- Watch out: the same rule as Claude: numbers come from a data tool, not from the model.
A real AI SEO workflow we ran: from keyword data to a brief
On October 27, 2026 we asked Claude, in Claude Code with the Ubersuggest connector, to research a made-up gluten free bakery in Austin, Texas and draft a content brief. It ran three Ubersuggest reports on US data and wrote the brief in the same chat.
Overview
"gluten free bakery near me": 74,000 US searches a month, SEO difficulty (SD) 25
Suggestions
"gluten free bakery austin" and "in austin tx": 1,600 a month each
SERP check
A local pack of 3 bakeries, then bakery sites from DA 13 to 42
Brief
One location page, plus a complete Google Business Profile
Terminal replay of our run on October 27, 2026: Claude Code calls the Ubersuggest connector three times. Gluten free bakery near me has 74,000 US searches a month, SEO difficulty 25 and a CPC of $0.53; gluten free bakery austin and gluten free bakery in austin tx have 1,600 each (SD 30 and 18), cakes 720 (SD 41), dedicated gluten free bakery 590 (SD 22) and recipes 8,100 (SD 45, skipped); the SERP shows a three-bakery local pack, then bakery sites from DA 13 to 42, Reddit, Facebook and Yelp. The brief targets one location page.
The numbers changed the plan in three ways:
- "Near me" is a map job, not a page job. The Austin results opened with a local pack of three bakeries, so the brief sends the 74,000 monthly "near me" searches to the Google Business Profile rather than to a new page.
- Two phrases, one page. "Gluten free bakery austin" (SD 30) and "gluten free bakery in austin tx" (SD 18) are the same searcher, so one location page targets both.
- Some volume is the wrong buyer. "Gluten free bakery recipes" has 8,100 searches, but those people bake at home. "Dedicated gluten free bakery" (590, SD 22) goes in only if the whole kitchen is gluten free.
US searches a month for "gluten free bakery near me"
a month each for the two Austin phrases
a month for "dedicated gluten free bakery", used only if it's true
Ubersuggest reports behind the whole brief
Ubersuggest, United States, pulled on October 27, 2026 through its connector in Claude Code.
To repeat it for your business, connect a keyword tool to your assistant (or paste in its exports) and send:
You are my SEO strategist. My business is [WHAT YOU SELL] in [CITY OR MARKET], and the page I want to rank is [PAGE].
Using only the keyword data and search results below (or the connected SEO tool), group the keywords by searcher intent, tell me which ones one page can target together, and which to skip and why.
Then write a brief: title under 60 characters, H1, the first two sentences, 4 to 6 H2s phrased as questions customers ask, and the proof the page needs.
Quote every number you use from the data, and say "not in the data" instead of guessing.
[PASTE KEYWORDS, VOLUMES, DIFFICULTY AND THE TOP 10 RESULTS]Check every number in the brief against the tool's own report before you write the page. In our run they matched, because the brief quoted the tool's output.
Free AI SEO tools: what $0 covers
Free AI SEO tools cover most of what one site needs to start; each one's catch is scope or limits.
| Free AI SEO tool | What you get for $0 | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Queries, clicks, position, and impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Only sites you verify |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | AI citations, keyword research with volumes, Site Scan | AI data is sampled |
| Ahrefs Free | Site Audit (5,000 crawl credits a month per project), Site Explorer, 1 AI Content Helper doc a month | Audits only for verified sites |
| Screaming Frog | Crawls up to 500 URLs | AI crawling and integrations need the $279 licence |
| Semrush Free | 10 reports a day, 1 demo project | No AI visibility features |
| Claude and ChatGPT free plans | Briefs and drafts from numbers you paste in | No search data of their own |
What AI SEO tools can't do for you
- Hand you exact numbers. Search volumes are estimates: Ubersuggest says it uses multiple data providers "to come up with estimations".
- Publish for you safely. Google's guidance on generative AI content says AI output may contain inaccuracies and needs a manual fact-check.
- Replace proof. Our demo brief asks the bakery for real photos, a true kitchen policy and real reviews; no tool supplies those.
Where our AI marketing course fits
ai school teaches AI marketing, and I build sites and AI systems for businesses, so read this page with that in mind: that's why our course isn't in the tables and nothing here is ranked. The AI marketing course is in early access (pre-order) and covers AI photos, video ads and automations for leads, email and social; it doesn't teach the SEO tools on this page. If a tool above fits your job, start with that tool.
Quick check0 of 3 correct
You want to know, for free, how often Microsoft Copilot cites your pages. Where do you look?
Not quite.
Bing's AI Performance report counts citations across Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partners. Semrush's free plan has no AI visibility features.
In our demo, why did one page target both "gluten free bakery austin" and "gluten free bakery in austin tx"?
Not quite.
Both phrases have 1,600 searches a month and the same local intent. Two pages would compete with each other.
Which plan tracks AI prompts every day: Semrush SEO at $139 or SE Ranking Core at $129?
Not quite.
SE Ranking Core tracks 100 prompts daily. Semrush's SEO plan marks its AI features as not included; they start on Starter at $199.
What to do next
Set up Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools this week, then look at which searches and AI answers already show your site. Pick the one job from the job table you'd do every week, and run that tool's free trial on your own site with the brief prompt above. When a new page goes live, automate the social posts that share it so it gets seen beyond search too.
Weekly AI SEO routine: 30 minutes and 5 copy-paste prompts
A Monday routine for one site: pull the numbers from Search Console and Bing, then five prompts that turn them into fixes, a brief, a page refresh and a progress note.
Enter your email and the full section opens right here. You also get a free lesson from the course.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free AI SEO tool?
Yes, several. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free and both report AI search visibility, Ahrefs Free audits a verified site with 5,000 crawl credits a month, and Screaming Frog's free version crawls up to 500 URLs. Semrush's free plan gives 10 reports a day, but without its AI visibility features.
Can ChatGPT or Claude do SEO by themselves?
They can plan, outline and draft, but on their own they don't see search volumes or rankings. Connect a data tool first: Ubersuggest offers a Claude plugin, an MCP server and a ChatGPT app, and Semrush Starter, Ahrefs Lite, SE Ranking Core and every Frase plan list MCP access.
How do I see if my site appears in AI Overviews or ChatGPT?
For Google, Search Console's generative AI report counts your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. For Microsoft Copilot, Bing Webmaster Tools counts citations. For ChatGPT you need a paid prompt tracker, such as Semrush's AI Visibility toolkit at $99 a month for 25 prompts or SE Ranking Core with 100 prompts a day.
Does Google penalize content made with AI SEO tools?
Not for being AI-assisted. Google's guidance says that generating many pages without adding value for users may break its spam policy on scaled content abuse, and asks you to fact-check AI output, because models predict likely words rather than retrieve facts.
Is Ahrefs or Semrush cheaper?
Ahrefs Starter at $29 a month is the cheapest SEO plan of the two. Above it, Ahrefs Lite is $129 and Semrush's SEO plan $139 month to month, and Semrush's AI tracking starts on Starter at $199 or as a separate $99 AI Visibility toolkit.
