Codex and Claude Code do the same core job: they read your project, edit files, run commands and report back. The practical differences are which subscription you already pay for, which models you get, and how each one keeps you in control. Codex comes with ChatGPT plans (in limited form even on Free), while Claude Code starts with Claude Pro at $20 a month and runs Opus 5.5 by default.

Setup: about ten minutes either way
Both install with one command and sign in through your browser.
Install Claude Code
On Mac, Linux or WSL:
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
On Windows, in PowerShell:
irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex
Then open your project folder, type claude and log in with your Claude account. If you have never used a terminal, the Claude desktop app has a Code tab, and our beginner's tutorial walks through a first project.
Install the Codex CLI
On Mac or Linux:
curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh
On Windows, in a new PowerShell window:
powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.ps1 | iex"
npm (npm install -g @openai/codex) and Homebrew (brew install --cask codex) work too, per OpenAI's Codex CLI page. Run codex in your project folder and choose Sign in with ChatGPT. Codex is also built into the ChatGPT desktop app.
Models in October 2026
Opus 5.5
Claude Code's default on Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise and the API. Anthropic recommends it for most work.
Fable 5.1
Anthropic's most capable model. On Pro it bills to usage credits, and on Max it can use up to half of your weekly limits.
GPT-6.1 Sol
OpenAI's pick for complex coding, described as near-Astra performance at lower cost. Plus and above.
GPT-6 Astra
OpenAI's most capable model, for the hardest end-to-end work.
GPT-6 Luna
OpenAI's efficient model for focused, repeatable tasks, and the one Free and Go users get.
Claude Code also offers Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 through /model for lighter work. Every current Claude model has a 1 million token context window.
On the OpenAI side, GPT-5.5 retired from Codex for ChatGPT sign-ins on October 14, 2026, so check old settings for gpt-5.5. Details are on OpenAI's Codex models page, and our AI model leaderboard tracks how the models rank.
Pricing and limits
From OpenAI's Codex pricing page and Claude's pricing page. Claude Pro is $200 a year if you pay yearly.
What each plan gives you for coding:
| Plan | Price | What you get for coding |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | $0 | Codex in the desktop app with GPT-6 Luna, subject to rollout |
| ChatGPT Go | $8 a month | Same Codex access as Free, plus more chat, uploads and images |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 a month | Codex in the app, CLI, IDE and web, GPT-6.1 Sol, cloud code review |
| ChatGPT Pro | $100, $200 or $500 a month | More usage than Plus; Ultrafast on the $500 tier |
| ChatGPT Business | $25 per user monthly, $20 billed yearly (2+ users) | Workspace, admin controls, no training on business data by default |
| Claude Pro | $20 a month, or $200 a year | Claude Code with Opus 5.5 by default |
| Claude Max | $100 (5x Pro) or $200 (20x Pro) a month | More usage, priority access, Fable within weekly limits |
| Claude Team | $25 per seat monthly, $20 billed yearly; Premium seats $125 or $100 | Claude Code for 2 to 150 people |
Both companies also sell API access, where you pay per token and skip the subscription. Our Claude Code pricing guide covers every Claude option.
How limits work is the bigger difference. OpenAI publishes estimates for Plus:
with GPT-6.1 Sol
with GPT-6 Astra
with GPT-6 Luna
OpenAI's own estimates from the Codex pricing page. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, though weekly limits can apply.
Anthropic does not publish message counts. Pro gives at least five times the Free plan's usage per five-hour session, Max gives 5x or 20x Pro, and paid plans add weekly limits.
The same task in both agents
Say you ask each one: "Add a booking request form to my salon's one-page site and email each request to the owner." Here is how the session runs, step by step, based on how each tool is documented to work.
| Step | Claude Code | Codex |
|---|---|---|
| Start in the project folder | claude | codex |
| Save standing instructions | /init writes a CLAUDE.md | /init writes an AGENTS.md |
| Plan before building | Shift+Tab into plan mode, or /plan | /plan |
| Let it work | Auto mode by default from version 2.1.283, with a classifier checking risky actions; Manual mode asks first | The Auto preset edits and runs commands inside the project, and asks before network access or edits outside it |
| Undo a bad turn | /rewind restores code, conversation or both | Git checkpoints before and after each task; /diff shows changes |
| Review the result | /review | /review |
| Check your usage | /usage | /status or /usage |
| Send long jobs to the cloud | Web sessions, claude --cloud, scheduled routines | Codex cloud, codex cloud |
| Run from a script | claude -p "..." | codex exec "..." |
The planning step reads much the same in both. An illustrative exchange:
- You:
/plan Add a booking request form to my salon's site and email each request to the owner.
- Codex:
Here's my plan: add a form section to the page, check the name, phone and date fields, send each request through an email service, then show a confirmation. Which email service do you want to use?
- You:
Pick one that's free to start, and ask me before creating any accounts.
The workflows are closer than the marketing suggests. For a beginner, the real differences are undo and instructions: Claude Code's checkpoints roll back without Git, while Codex leans on Git for that.
Your instructions file decides how well either agent follows your rules. That is why our guide to the CLAUDE.md file is worth ten minutes whichever tool you pick.
Where each one is stronger
Codex is stronger when
- You already pay for ChatGPT. On Plus or Pro, Codex costs nothing extra.
- You want numbers up front. OpenAI publishes usage estimates, and Pro currently has no five-hour limit.
- You value open source. The CLI is Apache 2.0 licensed on GitHub.
- Your work lives in GitHub. Codex responds to
@codexin issues and pull requests from Plus up. - You want maximum speed. Ultrafast mode is available on Pro $500.
Claude Code is stronger when
- You want Opus 5.5 by default. It is Anthropic's recommended model for most work, even on the $20 plan.
- You want easy undo. Built-in checkpoints restore code and conversation together.
- You want fine control. Manual, plan and auto modes decide exactly what runs without asking.
- You plan to build a setup. Skills, hooks, subagents and scheduled routines grow around one agent.
- You work with big inputs. Every current Claude model has a 1 million token context window.

Verdict by use case
| Your situation | Better pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You already pay for ChatGPT Plus | Codex first | Try it on real work before paying for a second plan |
| You have never coded and want a site or automation | Claude Code | Checkpoints and plan mode make mistakes cheap to undo |
| You want to start for $0 | Codex | ChatGPT Free includes limited Codex in the desktop app |
| You code all day and hit limits | Either at $100 | Compare Claude Max 5x with ChatGPT Pro 100 on your own tasks |
| You automate jobs in scripts or CI | Either | claude -p and codex exec both run without a chat window |
| Your team lives in GitHub pull requests | Codex, or Claude Code with GitHub Actions | Both review code; Codex's @codex mentions come with Plus |
| You want to know your limits before you pay | Codex | OpenAI publishes message estimates per plan and model |
Quick check0 of 2 correct
Which model does OpenAI recommend for complex coding in Codex in October 2026?
Not quite.
GPT-5.5 retired from Codex for ChatGPT sign-ins on October 14, 2026. OpenAI recommends GPT-6.1 Sol for complex work and Luna for focused, repeatable tasks.
How do you undo a bad turn in Claude Code without using Git?
Not quite.
Claude Code saves a checkpoint before every prompt, so /rewind can restore the code, the conversation or both.
What to do next
Pick one real task and run it in both agents on separate Git branches, with the same written brief. Compare how many corrections you needed and how confident you are in each result, not just the speed.
If Claude Code wins, our Claude Code course takes you from install to finished projects without assuming you code. If Codex wins, write a good AGENTS.md before your next session and keep going.
Shared AGENTS.md starter and fair-test kit
One instructions file both agents can read, a Git routine for clean comparisons, and six test prompts with a scoring rubric.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Claude Code with a ChatGPT subscription?
No. Claude Code signs in with a Claude plan, an Anthropic Console account or a supported cloud provider, and Codex signs in with ChatGPT or an OpenAI API key. Each subscription only covers its own company's agent.
Can I move my Codex setup into Claude Code?
Yes. In Claude Code 2.1.213 or later, run /import codex to bring over instruction files, MCP servers, commands, subagents and skills, and add --dry-run to preview first. Codex has its own /import command for Claude Code setups.
Does Codex use my code to train OpenAI's models?
On personal ChatGPT plans, the Improve the model for everyone setting also covers Codex tasks, so turning it off stops new tasks from being used for training. Codex has a separate Include environments setting, and Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces are not used for training by default.
Can Claude Code and Codex work on the same project?
Yes. Keep your shared rules in an AGENTS.md file: Codex reads it, and Claude Code 2.1.277 or later reads it whenever the project has no CLAUDE.md.
