Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI in everyday language and letting it write the code, judging the result by whether it works rather than by reading the code. AI researcher Andrej Karpathy coined the term in February 2025. It now covers everything from a shop owner making a landing page in a browser tool to a developer handing a whole feature to an AI agent.
Where the term came from
- February 2, 2025Andrej Karpathy posts on X about a new style of coding where you accept the AI's code without reading it.
- March 19, 2025Developer Simon Willison argues the term should mean only AI code that nobody reviews.
- November 6, 2025Collins Dictionary names vibe coding its Word of the Year for 2025.
Karpathy was an early engineer at OpenAI and later led AI work at Tesla. In his post, he described accepting the AI's changes without reading them, to the point where you "forget that the code even exists". He framed it as fine for throwaway weekend projects, not as a way to build serious software.
The phrase spread fast. Within months it meant almost any AI-built software, and Collins named it Word of the Year in November 2025.
How vibe coding works
The engine is a large language model (LLM), an AI trained on huge amounts of text and code that predicts what should come next. Modern tools wrap it in an agent: an AI that can take actions such as creating files and running commands, check the result, and keep going until the task is done.
Our guide to what an AI agent is explains how that differs from a chatbot. In practice, a vibe coding session follows the same loop every time.
Describe
Say what you want in plain words
AI builds
It writes the code and creates the files
Preview
You see the result running
React
Say what to change, like a client would
AI fixes
It edits, runs and repairs its own errors
Publish
Ship it once it does what you need
A first request might be: "A page where customers enter the number of rooms and see a price for a deep clean." A typical follow-up: "Make the total update as they type, and add a button to request a booking."
The skills it actually takes
You don't need to learn a programming language, but you do need four habits that most people already use when they brief a designer or a contractor.
- Describing outcomes. Say what the visitor should be able to do, not how the code should work.
- Giving feedback like a client. "The button is hard to find on a phone" beats "make it better".
- Testing on purpose. Try the wrong inputs, the empty form and the small screen, not just the happy path.
- Knowing when to stop. If the AI fails at the same fix twice, ask it to explain the problem before it tries again.
Vibe coding vs traditional coding vs no-code
| Traditional coding | No-code builders | Vibe coding | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who writes the code | A developer | Nobody: you arrange ready-made blocks | An AI, from your descriptions |
| What you need to know | A programming language | The builder's editor | How to describe and test what you want |
| Flexibility | Anything | What the blocks allow | Close to anything you can describe |
| Speed to a first version | Slowest | Fast | Fastest |
| Code you can take elsewhere | Yes | No | Usually |
No-code builders such as Wix or Squarespace are still a good choice for a standard site you'll rarely change. Vibe coding earns its place when you need something the blocks can't do, or you want code you own.
What vibe coding is good for
Landing pages
A single page for an offer, an event or an ad campaign.
Internal tools
A quote calculator, a stock tracker or a dashboard built from a spreadsheet.
Prototypes
A working version to test an idea with customers before you pay a developer.
One-off jobs
Cleaning a messy spreadsheet, renaming hundreds of files or converting formats.
Personal automations
Small scripts that save you the same few minutes every day.
Developer handoff
A clickable mockup that explains what you want better than a written spec.
The common thread: if it breaks, the damage is small and you'll notice quickly.
Where it goes wrong
Even professional developers are wary of AI-written code. In Stack Overflow's 2025 Developer Survey, most respondents use AI tools, yet more of them distrust the accuracy of AI output than trust it.
use or plan to use AI tools in their development work
actively distrust the accuracy of AI output
trust it
name nearly-correct AI answers as their biggest frustration
From the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey.
- Nearly-right code. It runs, looks finished and fails on the case nobody tested.
- Invisible security gaps. Code can work perfectly while leaving customer data open to strangers.
- Hidden fragility. In bigger projects, each change can break something unrelated.
- Upkeep. Software needs updates, and someone has to notice when they're due.
- Cost loops. Credit-based tools charge for every attempt, including the failed fixes.
The rule of thumb: the more a mistake would cost in money, data or reputation, the more review you need. Real incidents and a full safety checklist are in is vibe coding bad.
The main types of vibe coding tools
Browser app builders
Lovable, Bolt, v0, Replit and Base44 build and host an app from a chat in your browser. The easiest place to start.
AI coding agents
Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and Google Antigravity work on real project files and run the steps for you. More control and ownership.
AI code editors
Cursor and GitHub Copilot add AI to a full code editor. Built for people who read code.
If you want to understand the agent option first, read what Claude Code is. Prices and picks by user type are in the best vibe coding tools.
How to vibe code responsibly as a non-developer
- Start where mistakes are cheap. Pick a project where a bug is an annoyance, not a disaster.
- Ask for a plan before code. Approve the approach first, then let the AI build.
- Keep a way back. Save a version with Git or your tool's history after every working step.
- Keep secrets out of prompts. Never paste passwords, API keys or customer records into a chat.
- Test like a customer. Use a real phone and try wrong inputs, not just the happy path.
- Get a review when money or data is involved. A few hours of a developer's time costs less than a leak.
A first project for this week
A small internal tool is the best first project, because you already know exactly what "right" looks like. This prompt builds a price calculator and works in Claude Code or any browser builder:
Build a simple price calculator for my [TYPE OF BUSINESS] as a single
web page. Inputs: [WHAT THE CUSTOMER CHOOSES].
My prices: [YOUR PRICE LIST].
Show the total as the inputs change. Ask me about anything unclear
before you build, and never invent a price.Test it against three recent real jobs. Your first few follow-ups will usually look something like this:
- You:
The total ignores the add-ons. Fridge cleaning is $35 and oven cleaning is $40, and both are optional.
- Claude Code:
Fixed. Both add-ons are now checkboxes, and the total adds $35 or $40 when each one is ticked. I checked four combinations against your price list and they all match.
- You:
Good. Under the total, add a line saying the final price is confirmed after a short call.
- Claude Code:
Added. The line sits under the total in smaller text, and nothing else on the page changed.
When the totals match what you actually charged, you've vibe coded something useful.

Quick check0 of 2 correct
By Simon Willison's definition, when does AI-assisted work stop being vibe coding?
Not quite.
Willison keeps the term for unreviewed AI code. Reviewing and testing it makes it ordinary AI-assisted programming.
Which of these is the safest project to vibe code on your own?
Not quite.
Low-stakes internal tools are ideal. Anything with payments or sensitive data needs a professional review.
What to do next
Pick one small, low-stakes tool you'd use this week and build it with the prompt above. Keep notes on where the AI misunderstood you, because that is the skill you're really learning.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make money with vibe coding?
People do sell landing pages, small tools and automations built this way, but clients pay for results and reliability, not for the method. Treat it as a faster way to deliver work you can stand behind, and price in time for testing and fixes.
Do professional developers vibe code?
Most use AI with review rather than handing over the keyboard. In Stack Overflow's 2025 Developer Survey, 72% of respondents said vibe coding was not part of their professional work.
What programming language does vibe coding use?
Whatever the tool picks or you ask for. Websites are usually built with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, often with a framework such as React or Next.js, and you can ask the AI to use the simplest option that fits.
Can I vibe code a mobile app?
Yes, some tools build mobile apps as well as websites; Replit, for example, lists mobile apps among the projects its Agent can create. Publishing to the App Store or Google Play still means developer accounts, review rules and far more testing than a website.
Is vibe coding the same as asking ChatGPT to write code?
Partly. Pasting code from a chat window into files yourself is the manual version of the same idea. Vibe coding tools go further: they create the files, run them and fix their own errors, so your job is judging the result.
