For most small businesses, the best AI agent is the one built into a tool you already pay for: ChatGPT Work or Claude (Cowork and Claude Code) for research and document work, and a builder like n8n or Zapier when you want an agent that runs across your apps on its own. For phone calls and customer support, specialist platforms such as Retell AI and Intercom Fin do the job better. Every price below was checked on the official pricing page on 18 October 2026, and prices change often.

Ready-made agents you use, not build

These are the fastest way to get value: you describe a task in plain English and the agent works through it, with no setup beyond your subscription.

ChatGPT Work

  • What it is: OpenAI's agent for longer, multi-step work. It researches, analyzes and creates documents, spreadsheets, presentations and reports (OpenAI Help Center).
  • Standout feature: on eligible paid plans, Work tasks can run on a schedule or start from events such as a new Gmail message or Slack message.
  • Price: the free plan includes limited Work access in the desktop app. Plus costs $20 a month (Plus); Business costs $20 per user a month billed annually or $25 monthly, with at least two seats (Business); Pro comes in $100, $200 and $500 monthly tiers (Pro).
  • Watch out: Work draws on a usage allowance, so heavy use can mean buying extra credits.

Claude Cowork and Claude Code

  • What they are: Cowork is Anthropic's agent for non-coding work such as research, analysis and documents (Cowork). Claude Code works directly on the files and programs on your computer.
  • Standout feature: Claude Code can run on a schedule from the desktop app, and cloud routines keep working when your computer is off.
  • Price: Pro is $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly, Max starts at $100 a month, and Team Standard seats are $20 billed annually or $25 monthly (Claude pricing). The free plan does not include Claude Code. Our Claude Code pricing guide compares the plans in detail.
  • Watch out: Cowork is still rolling out to Pro and Max plans, so check that it appears in your account.

Agents inside the software you already run

If your business lives in Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or HubSpot, start with the agent builder that is already there. It knows your data and needs no new login.

Google Workspace Studio

  • What it is: you describe an automation in plain words and Gemini builds an agent that works across Gmail, Drive, Chat, Sheets and other Workspace apps, with templates to start from (Workspace Studio).
  • Connections: Google lists connectors for Asana, Jira, Mailchimp and Salesforce, plus custom extensions.
  • Price: included in all Workspace Business and Enterprise plans. Workspace prices vary by country, so check the Workspace pricing page for yours; there is a 14-day trial.
  • Watch out: Google says Studio's data is not used to train its general AI models outside your domain, but third-party connections need your own review.

Microsoft Copilot Studio

  • What it is: Microsoft's builder for agents across Microsoft 365 and other systems (Copilot Studio pricing).
  • Price: people with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, an add-on listed at $30 per user a month paid yearly, can build and use internal agents at no extra cost. Otherwise you buy packs of 25,000 Copilot Credits for $200 a month, or pay as you go through Azure.
  • Watch out: publishing agents outside your organization needs a standalone Copilot Studio license.

HubSpot Breeze agents

  • What they are: a customer agent that resolves support tickets, a prospecting agent that researches accounts and drafts outreach, and a data agent that pulls insights from your CRM (Breeze agents).
  • Price: the agent hub and agent builder come with HubSpot's Starter, Professional and Enterprise editions. Custom agents use HubSpot Credits each time they run.
  • Watch out: they only make sense if HubSpot is already your CRM.

No-code agent builders

Builders let you assemble your own agent from a model, instructions and app connections, then run it on a trigger such as a new form entry, an email or a schedule. For a wider look at automation tools, see our roundup of the best AI automation tools.

n8n

  • What it is: a visual workflow tool with an AI Agent node that combines a chat model, memory and tools, plus a newer standalone agent builder in preview. It can pause and ask a human before a chosen tool runs.
  • Price: n8n Cloud Starter is €20 a month billed annually with 2,500 executions, and Pro is €50 with 10,000; the official page lists prices in euros (n8n pricing). The Community Edition is free to self-host under n8n's fair-code license. Our n8n pricing guide works through real costs.
  • Best for: owners who want full control or self-hosting. Our n8n AI agent tutorial builds one step by step.
  • Watch out: the learning curve is steeper than Zapier's.

Zapier Agents

  • What it is: agents that act across more than 9,000 apps, use your company knowledge and can work in the browser through a Chrome extension (Zapier pricing).
  • Price: every Zapier account gets 400 agent activities a month free, with each run capped at 10 activities. Agents Pro starts at about $33.33 a month billed annually for 1,500 activities, billed separately from regular Zap tasks.
  • Watch out: every step counts as an activity, including searches and knowledge lookups, so busy agents climb tiers quickly.

We compare the three big builders in depth in n8n vs Zapier vs Make.

Make AI Agents

  • What it is: agents built, run and debugged on the same visual canvas as Make's scenarios, with a reasoning panel that shows each step (Make AI Agents).
  • Price: available on all plans, including the free plan with 1,000 credits a month (Make pricing). Most actions use one credit, while some AI features use more.
  • Watch out: check how many credits your agent uses per run before you move it to a busy trigger.

Lindy

  • What it is: an AI assistant that connects to tools like Gmail, Slack and Notion to clear your inbox, take meeting notes, draft emails and update your CRM (Lindy).
  • Price: a free start with $50 of credits that last seven days, then Team at $49.99 a month for 5,000 credits, billed per active user (Lindy pricing).
  • Watch out: credits per task vary widely, from a few for quick asks to thousands for big builds.

Phone and support agents

Customer-facing agents are priced by usage, which makes volume the deciding factor. These four are the clearest on price:

Free AI agents worth trying

You can test real agents without paying, as long as you accept some limits:

Free ways to try an AI agent

n8n Community Edition

Free to self-host on your own computer or server. You pay only for hosting and the AI model you connect.

Zapier Agents free tier

400 agent activities a month, with each run capped at 10 activities.

Make free plan

1,000 credits a month, and Make's AI Agents work on every plan.

ElevenLabs Agents free plan

15 minutes of agent calls a month, enough to test a phone agent.

Langflow and Dify

Open-source visual builders you can self-host. Langflow uses the MIT license; Dify uses a modified Apache 2.0 license.

Free credits

Retell gives new accounts $10, Vapi $5 and Lindy $50 for seven days.

On the chat side, ChatGPT's free plan includes limited Work access in the desktop app, and Google's free Gemini plan includes Deep Research (Gemini plans). Neither is a full agent platform, but both show you how agent-style work feels.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch AI agent platforms later?

Yes, and it pays to plan for it from day one. Keep your instructions, test cases and knowledge files in plain documents you own, so moving means reconnecting tools rather than starting over.

Do AI agent platforms train on my data?

The business plans of the major AI companies say they do not train on your business data by default, while consumer plans usually let you opt out in settings. Read each platform's data policy before you connect customer information.

What is the difference between an AI agent platform and an AI model?

The model, such as Claude, GPT or Gemini, is the reasoning engine. The platform wraps it with instructions, tool connections, memory, schedules and logs, and many platforms let you swap the model underneath.

Are AI agents worth it for a one-person business?

Often yes for research, admin and follow-up, because every hour saved goes straight back to you. The trap is building agents for tasks you do twice a month, so aim them at work you repeat every day or every week.
