Claude Code Alternatives (2026): What to Switch To and Why
The best Claude Code alternative depends on why you're leaving, and for limits or the terminal the fix may be inside Claude Code itself. For a lower price, Codex starts in ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot Pro costs $10; for other models, Copilot or OpenCode; for a code editor, Cursor; for $0, Antigravity or OpenCode's free models.

Check the fixes inside Claude Code before you switch: limits and the terminal often have one. If you still want a Claude Code alternative, Codex comes with ChatGPT (the desktop app from $0, subject to rollout; the full version on Plus at $20), GitHub Copilot Pro costs $10, Copilot and OpenCode open up other models, and Cursor gives you a full code editor. Whichever you pick, rename CLAUDE.md to AGENTS.md first: almost every alternative reads it, and so does Claude Code.
Why people look for a Claude Code alternative
Most people who look for a Claude Code alternative hit one of four walls: the limits, the price, Claude-only models or the terminal. Two of the four can often be fixed without leaving.
- Limits. Every Claude plan resets on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add a weekly limit, and Claude chat and Claude Code "all draws from the same pool", with no fixed message count (Claude pricing). Our Claude Code usage limits guide explains the windows.
- Price. Claude Code has no free plan. Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 billed yearly ($200 up front), and Max $100 or $200 (every plan compared). One cause of surprise bills: with an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable set, Claude Code bills the API instead of your plan (Anthropic's help article).
- One model family. Anthropic supports only Claude models in Claude Code: Opus 5.5 by default, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 through /model.
- The terminal. Claude Code also runs in the Claude desktop app, in VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains, and on the web, on the same plan (Claude Code overview).

From claude.com/pricing and Anthropic's Pro and Max help article, checked October 26, 2026.
Upgrade to Max
Max 5x ($100) gives 5 times Pro's usage per five-hour session, Max 20x ($200) 20 times.
Usage credits
Turn them on to keep using Claude on Pro after you reach the five-hour or weekly limit, billed at standard API rates.
A Console account
Anthropic suggests API credits for intensive coding sprints; Opus 5.5 costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output.
Ollama
Ollama's own integration runs Claude Code on local or cloud open models.
Pick a Claude Code alternative by your reason for leaving
Start from the reason, not the tool: each reason has a different answer, and five of the seven have a fix inside Claude Code to try first.
| Why you're leaving | Try first, inside Claude Code | Switch to | Cheapest paid start |
|---|---|---|---|
| You hit the limits | Max 5x, usage credits or a Console API account | Codex on ChatGPT Plus, with its own allowance | $20 |
| It costs too much | Check no ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set; Pro billed yearly is $17 | GitHub Copilot Pro or OpenCode Go | $10 |
| You want other models | Ollama's Claude Code integration | GitHub Copilot or OpenCode | $10 |
| You want an editor, not a terminal | The desktop app or the VS Code and JetBrains plugins | Cursor | $8 (Plus, Cursor's own models); $30 for Claude |
| You want to pay nothing | None: Claude Code has no free plan | Google Antigravity, Copilot Free or OpenCode's free models | $0 |
| Your code must stay on your computer | Ollama with a local model | OpenCode, Kilo Code or Cline with a local model | $0 plus your hardware |
| You don't want files or a terminal | None | Lovable or Replit, in the browser | $20 (Replit Core) |

The alternatives in detail (checked October 26, 2026)
Each entry answers the same questions, ending with what happens to your Claude Code setup. The 12-agent roundup with benchmark scores is our best AI coding agents guide.
OpenAI Codex, if you already pay for ChatGPT
- Price: included in ChatGPT. Free and Go ($8) get the Codex desktop app with GPT-6 Luna, subject to rollout; Plus ($20) adds the CLI, IDE extension, web, iOS and GPT-6.1 Sol; Pro is $100, $200 or $500 (Codex pricing). On Plus, OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 local messages per five hours with GPT-6.1 Sol, "not fixed message limits".
- Where it runs: the ChatGPT desktop app (Mac, Windows, Linux), the open source Codex CLI, an IDE extension and the web.
- Models: OpenAI's on your ChatGPT plan; Codex can also run local models through Ollama or LM Studio, set in config.toml (advanced configuration).
- From your Claude Code setup: reads AGENTS.md, and CLAUDE.md only if you add it to project_doc_fallback_filenames. Its import (/import in the CLI, Settings > Import in the desktop app) copies your instruction files into AGENTS.md, plus settings, skills, MCP servers and recent chats (Import from another agent).
GitHub Copilot, for the lowest price with Claude models
- Price: Free gives 2,000 completions a month and limited chat and agent use, with models picked by auto selection. Pro is $10 a month with $15 of monthly AI credits, $5 of it a flex allotment GitHub says may change; Pro+ is $39 and Max $100 (Copilot plans).
- Where it runs: editor extensions (VS Code, JetBrains, Xcode and more), the Copilot CLI and the Copilot app (it needs Git), plus a cloud agent on github.com from Pro.
- Models: Pro includes Claude Sonnet and Haiku but no Opus; Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 start at Pro+, next to GPT, Gemini and Grok models. Copilot CLI also takes your own Anthropic key or a local Ollama model.
- From your Claude Code setup: reads AGENTS.md or one CLAUDE.md in the repository root, loads project skills in .claude/skills, and takes personal skills in ~/.copilot/skills or ~/.agents/skills (the folders differ by surface).
Cursor, if you want a code editor
- Price: Free has limited agent and chat use and no Claude. Plus is $8 a month but runs only Cursor's own models (Grok 4.7, 4.6, 4.5 and Composer 2.5). Premium ($30) adds cloud agents and lets you use Claude, GPT and Gemini at API list price, paid on top from prepaid credit; Super is $100 and Ultra $200 (Cursor pricing). Older plans such as Pro and Pro+ keep working.
- Where it runs: a desktop code editor built on VS Code, the Cursor CLI and, from Premium, cloud agents.
- Models: your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Google keys work on Premium and up, for chat models only.
- From your Claude Code setup: reads AGENTS.md (its rules docs don't mention CLAUDE.md), loads .claude/skills and ~/.claude/skills as they are, and its mcp.json uses the same mcpServers format as Claude Code.
Whether Premium plus per-token Claude beats Claude Pro depends on your usage; Claude Code vs Cursor works through the numbers.
Google Antigravity, for a $0 start or Claude on a Google plan
- Price: $0 for individuals, with a quota refreshed weekly (Antigravity pricing). Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month in the US) refreshes it every five hours up to a weekly limit; Ultra starts at $99.99 (Google AI plans, Antigravity plans). Google AI Plus ($4.99) gets only the free plan's models.
- Where it runs: a desktop app, the Antigravity CLI, extensions for VS Code, JetBrains and other editors, and the Antigravity IDE.
- Models: Gemini 3.8 Flash on every plan; Gemini 4 Argon, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Opus 5.5 on AI Pro (Claude only on a paid plan, not a trial) and Ultra (models page). No bring-your-own key.
- From your Claude Code setup: reads AGENTS.md and project skills in .agents/skills; global skills go in ~/.gemini/config/skills (app and IDE) or ~/.gemini/antigravity-cli/skills (CLI).
Gemini CLI, still the free Google pick on many lists, stopped serving free and Google AI Pro or Ultra users on June 18, 2026 (Google's announcement).
OpenCode, for open source and any model
- Price: the app is free, with free models that work without an account. OpenCode Go is $10 a month for a curated set of coding models, Claude Haiku 5.5 among them (Go Plus $40), with at most 20% of the monthly allowance per five hours; Zen is pay as you go (OpenCode Go).
- Where it runs: a terminal interface, a desktop app, a web app and an IDE extension, under the MIT license.
- Models: more than 75 providers, including Claude through an Anthropic API key, ChatGPT Plus or Pro and GitHub Copilot logins, and local models; not a Claude Pro or Max plan, which OpenCode's docs say Anthropic prohibits.
- From your Claude Code setup: OpenCode V2 reads AGENTS.md only (V1 also read CLAUDE.md), loads ~/.claude/skills and .claude/skills as they are, and keeps MCP servers in opencode.jsonc under mcp.servers.
Kilo Code and Cline, to pick any model, local ones included
- Price: Kilo Code has no platform fee for individuals: you pay model rates through Kilo Gateway or your own keys, use Auto Free's free models, or add an optional Kilo Pass from $19 (Kilo pricing). Cline is free for individuals, with limited-time free models on a Cline account and an optional ClinePass at $9.99 a month (ClinePass).
- Where they run: Kilo Code in VS Code, JetBrains, a CLI, a beta desktop app and the cloud; Cline in VS Code, a CLI and a desktop app for open-weight models.
- Models: Kilo lists more than 500 models from 60+ providers; Cline takes Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, DeepSeek and more. Both run local models through Ollama or LM Studio, and Cline asks before every action by default.
- From your Claude Code setup: both read AGENTS.md. Kilo also reads a project CLAUDE.md, loads .claude/skills folders with its Claude Code compatibility on, and its Claude Code Migration imports your global setup once. Cline reads project .claude/skills and global ~/.cline/skills.
Lovable or Replit, if you don't want files on your computer
These build and host the app in your browser only, a different job from Claude Code, which edits files on your machine.
- Price: Lovable Pro is $25 a month with 100 credits and custom domains; Free gives 5 build credits a day with invite-only publishing (Lovable pricing). Replit Core is $20 a month, $18 billed yearly; on the free Starter plan the one published app goes down after 30 days (Replit pricing).
- From your Claude Code setup: Lovable reads a root AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md and imports SKILL.md skills; Replit keeps skills in /.agents/skills.
What carries over from Claude Code
Your instructions file and your skills mostly carry over; your MCP server list and your Claude plan usually don't. This is where each tool looks, from its docs on October 26, 2026, and where the skills installer put the same skill that day.
| Tool | Reads CLAUDE.md | Reads AGENTS.md | Loads your Claude skills folders | Where npx skills put the pdf skill |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Yes | Yes | Yes | ~/.claude/skills |
| Codex | Partial | Yes | No | ~/.agents/skills |
| GitHub Copilot | Yes | Yes | Partial | ~/.agents/skills |
| Cursor | No | Yes | Yes | ~/.agents/skills |
| Google Antigravity | No | Yes | No | ~/.agents/skills, not read |
| OpenCode | No | Yes | Yes | ~/.agents/skills |
| Devin Desktop (Windsurf) | No | Yes | Partial | ~/.codeium/windsurf/skills |
| Kilo Code | Yes | Yes | Partial | Not run |
| Cline | No | Yes | Partial | Not run |
No means the file or folder isn't among those the tool's docs list; Codex's import still copies your skills across. Partial: Codex reads CLAUDE.md only as an added fallback name; Copilot and Cline load project .claude/skills but not ~/.claude/skills; Devin Desktop and Kilo Code load them only with their Claude Code setting turned on.
CLAUDE.md vs AGENTS.md
AGENTS.md is the file the tools share, and Claude Code reads it too: from version 2.1.277 it loads AGENTS.md when the folder has no CLAUDE.md, .claude/CLAUDE.md or CLAUDE.local.md (Claude Code memory docs). So the simplest move is a rename, and every tool in the table picks it up.
To keep both files, type /config in Claude Code and set Project instructions to claude-md-and-agents-md. One trap: a CLAUDE.local.md counts as a CLAUDE.md, so adding one quietly stops Claude Code from reading your AGENTS.md. Anthropic also notes that some sessions can't read AGENTS.md directly; there, import it from a CLAUDE.md.
Skills folders
Skills (folders with a SKILL.md file that teach the agent one job) follow the Agent Skills open standard, which Anthropic first developed, and every tool on this page reads them. The folder is what changes. We installed Anthropic's pdf skill with the npx skills installer (version 1.7.4) for Claude Code and seven alternatives on October 26, 2026:
Terminal replay of three real installs of Anthropic's pdf skill with npx skills: for Codex and Cursor the installer reports Found 1 skill, Installation complete and the path ~/.agents/skills/pdf; for Windsurf it reports the path ~/.codeium/windsurf/skills/pdf.
- Codex, Cursor, Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode got ~/.agents/skills/pdf, a folder each one's docs list. Cursor doesn't send it to Cloud Agents: only ~/.cursor/skills syncs, with Sync Skills for Cloud Agents turned on.
- Windsurf (now Devin Desktop) got ~/.codeium/windsurf/skills/pdf, which Devin Desktop still reads.
- Antigravity is the miss: the installer reported a copy for it but wrote to ~/.agents/skills/pdf, which Antigravity's docs don't list as global. Copy the skill to ~/.gemini/config/skills or ~/.gemini/antigravity-cli/skills.
We checked where the files landed against each tool's docs; we didn't open the tools to watch them load the skill. Cursor and OpenCode also read ~/.claude/skills, so if they're your only other tools, skip the copy. To move everything at once on Mac or Linux:
# in your project folder: one instructions file for every tool
mv CLAUDE.md AGENTS.md
# your personal skills, copied where most alternatives look
mkdir -p ~/.agents/skills
cp -R ~/.claude/skills/. ~/.agents/skills/
On Windows, in PowerShell:
Rename-Item CLAUDE.md AGENTS.md
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force "$HOME\.agents\skills" | Out-Null
Copy-Item -Recurse -Force "$HOME\.claude\skills\*" "$HOME\.agents\skills\"
MCP servers
MCP (Model Context Protocol, the standard way to plug tools such as a database or your email into an agent) works in every alternative above, but most won't bring your server list along. Claude Code keeps project servers in .mcp.json and personal ones in ~/.claude.json; run claude mcp list before you move.
- Codex: its import copies your MCP server configuration; check what arrived with /mcp, and sign in again where a server asks.
- Kilo Code: Claude Code Migration imports the top-level servers in ~/.claude.json, switched off until you enable them.
- Cursor: mcp.json uses the same mcpServers format, so most entries paste across.
- Antigravity: the CLI reads the same mcpServers shape from ~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json, but remote servers must use Streamable HTTP, not the older SSE transport.
- OpenCode V2: a different shape, under mcp.servers in opencode.jsonc; run /mcps to sign in to a server.
Free and local options, and their catch
Every $0 option limits the amount, the models or your privacy, and few include a Claude model. OpenCode, the free and open source Claude Code alternative, has its own guide.
| Free option | Claude models on it | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Google Antigravity | Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6, until November 2, 2026 | A weekly quota; those two and GPT-OSS-120b leave on November 2, 2026 |
| GitHub Copilot Free | Claude Haiku 4.5 is on its list, but auto selection picks the model | 2,000 completions a month, limited agent use, no cloud agent |
| Codex on ChatGPT Free | None (GPT-6 Luna) | Desktop app only, subject to rollout |
| OpenCode free models | None | Some, such as Big Pickle, may use your data to improve the model |
| Kilo Code Auto Free | Not stated | May route to providers that log prompts |
| Devin Free | None (SWE-1.6 only) | A light agent quota |
A fully local Claude Code alternative runs an agent on a model on your own computer: OpenCode, Kilo Code and Cline connect to local models, Codex can use Ollama or LM Studio, and Copilot CLI takes a local Ollama model. It costs nothing per task, but the model must keep up: GitHub requires tool calling and streaming for Copilot CLI and recommends a context window of at least 128k tokens.
Where our Claude Code course fits
ai school teaches Claude Code, and I build client projects with it, so read this page with that in mind. That's why our course isn't in the decision table and nothing here is ranked. The Claude Code course is in early access (pre-order) and teaches Claude Code itself to people who don't code; if an alternative above fits your reason better, use that tool.
Quick check0 of 2 correct
You hit Claude Pro's limit twice a week but like working in Claude Code. What should you check before switching?
Not quite.
Max 5x gives 5 times Pro's usage per session, and usage credits keep Pro working past a limit. A set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY makes Claude Code bill the API instead of your plan. Cursor Plus runs only Cursor's own Grok and Composer models.
Which instructions file do the most alternatives read?
Not quite.
Codex, Copilot, Cursor, Antigravity, OpenCode, Devin Desktop, Kilo Code and Cline all read AGENTS.md, and Claude Code reads it when there is no CLAUDE.md. OpenCode V2 no longer reads CLAUDE.md.
What to do next
Find your reason's row in the decision table and, if it has a fix inside Claude Code, try that for a week first. If you still switch, rename CLAUDE.md to AGENTS.md, copy your skills, bring your MCP servers across and give the new tool one small real task on a copy of your project before you cancel anything. If you stay, our Claude Code course has lessons on the CLAUDE.md file and on skills and MCP, the same setup this page moves between tools.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my Claude Pro or Max plan in another coding tool?
Not in another tool's own agent. Anthropic doesn't let third-party developers offer Claude.ai login or route requests through Free, Pro or Max credentials, so Claude in an alternative is billed by that tool or per token through an API key. Signing in to Claude Code itself with your own plan stays allowed, even where another platform hosts it.
Which Claude Code alternative works with a ChatGPT subscription?
Codex, which comes with every ChatGPT plan from Free up. OpenCode's site also says it accepts ChatGPT Plus or Pro logins, and GitHub Copilot subscriptions, so you can run that open source agent on a plan you already pay for.
Can I keep Claude Code but use a different model?
Yes, through Ollama: its own Claude Code integration connects Claude Code to local and cloud open models through an Anthropic-compatible API. Anthropic says it doesn't support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models through a gateway, so treat this as Ollama's setup, not Anthropic's.
Can another tool import my Claude Code setup for me?
Two can. Codex's import (/import in the CLI, Settings > Import in the ChatGPT desktop app) copies your instruction files into AGENTS.md, plus settings, skills, MCP servers and recent chats. Kilo Code's Claude Code Migration, off by default under Settings > Experimental, imports your global CLAUDE.md, standalone skills and the top-level MCP servers in ~/.claude.json once.
Which Claude Code alternative is best for beginners?
If you don't code, pick one with a desktop app so you never open a terminal: Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app (from $0, subject to rollout) or Google Antigravity's app ($0 with a weekly quota). If you'd rather not handle files at all, Lovable or Replit build and host the app in your browser.
