How to install a skill in GitHub Copilot

  1. Step 1

Copy the install prompt from the skill's page and paste it into Copilot chat in agent mode.

  2. Step 2

Copilot runs the installer and puts the skill in ~/.copilot/skills/.

  3. Step 3

Ask for the job, or type / and choose the skill.

The quickest way is to let GitHub Copilot do it. Every skill page here has this prompt filled in with the right address; this is what it looks like:

Install prompt for GitHub Copilot
Install the skill at [skill address] for GitHub Copilot so it works in every project: run `npx skills add [skill address] -a github-copilot -g -y` in my terminal. If Node.js is missing, tell me how to install it first. When it's done, confirm the skill is installed and tell me how to use it.

Prefer to do it by hand? A skill is just a folder with a SKILL.md file. Put the folder in ~/.copilot/skills/ to use it everywhere, or in .github/skills/ or .agents/skills/ inside a project to share it with that project only.

Good to know

  • Copilot finds skills by description, but it does not promise to use one for every matching request. Calling it with / is the sure way.
  • Copilot in VS Code also reads ~/.claude/skills/, so your Claude Code skills appear there too.

Skills follow one open standard (a folder with a SKILL.md file), so the same skill also works in Claude Code, Claude app, Codex and ChatGPT. Facts on this page are checked against GitHub's own documentation.

Skills teach GitHub Copilot how to do a job. To let it reach your other tools (Notion, Gmail, Shopify and more), see the MCP servers that work in GitHub Copilot.
