Claude Cowork Joins Chat: Tasks Now Run While Your Laptop Is Shut
Anthropic merged Cowork into Claude chat. Long tasks now run in the cloud, repeat on a schedule and come back as Docs or Slides. Here is how to use it well.

Anthropic merged Claude Cowork and Claude chat into a single Claude on September 16, 2026. You no longer pick a mode: you ask for what you need, and longer jobs keep running in the cloud after you close your laptop, can repeat on a schedule, and come back as finished documents, slides or spreadsheets. The change reached Pro and Max plans first, and Docs, Slides and Design have since left beta for every plan, including Free.
What actually changed
Until September, Claude had two front doors. Chat was for conversations; Cowork, Anthropic's agent for office work, was a separate place for bigger jobs.
The announcement says people found it frustrating to decide where a task belonged, and work started in one did not carry into the other. Now Claude decides what the task needs.
Hand off a whole task
Describe the outcome and Claude searches the web, reads your files, runs code and assembles the result, with several tasks running at once.
Keep working without you
Bigger tasks run in the cloud even if you close the laptop or the page. The result waits in the conversation.
Repeat on a schedule
Describe a job once, such as a Monday report, and it runs hourly, daily, weekly or on weekdays.
Return real files
Documents, spreadsheets with working formulas, and decks you can open in PowerPoint or share by link.
Follow from your phone
A task started at your desk shows up in the mobile app, where you can answer Claude's questions and redirect it.
Who gets what, and when
The rollout is staged, so two people on the same plan may see it weeks apart. If your message box still shows separate "Chat" and "Cowork" options, your account has not moved yet.
- September 16, 2026The merged Claude starts rolling out to Pro and Max on web, desktop and mobile, with Docs and Slides in beta
- October 8, 2026Docs, Slides and Design leave beta on every plan, including Free; Dashboards and Motion enter beta
- December 14, 2026The standalone Claude Design site at claude.ai/design is due to close, now that Design lives inside Claude
Team and Free plans were promised the full merged experience "soon", and Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice. Scheduled tasks are available on all paid plans, according to the Help Center guide. Anthropic's October 8 update says people had already made more than 45 million docs, decks and designs since the September launch.
Setting up your first scheduled task
This is the feature most worth your time if you run a business alone or with a small team. You describe a recurring job in plain words, Claude asks what it needs to know, then shows you the task before anything is saved.
Describe it

Click Schedule and it runs in the cloud from then on
A short exchange looks like this:
- You:
Every Monday at 8 AM, read the Orders 2026 sheet in my Drive and give me a one-page summary of last week.
- Claude:
I can set that up. Should the summary go into a doc, and do you want the top products or the top customers?
- You:
A doc, top products, and flag any order over $1,000.
- Claude:
Here is the task: Weekly orders summary, every Monday at 8:00 AM, reads Orders 2026, writes a one-page doc and flags orders over $1,000. Click Schedule to confirm.
For this to work, Google Drive has to be connected first in Customize, then Connectors. Scheduled tasks run remotely, so they fire even when your computer is asleep, but a task that needs files or apps on your own machine will only run there.
Five jobs to hand over this week
Good first candidates are boring, repeatable and easy to check:
- Monday numbers. A weekly sales or orders summary from a sheet you already keep.
- Inbox triage. Every weekday morning, a list of emails that need a reply, with draft answers you approve.
- Competitor watch. A weekly scan of three competitors' websites and posts, with what changed.
- Meeting packs. Turn your notes and last month's deck into a short slide update you can download as PowerPoint.
- File cleanup. A monthly pass over a downloads or invoices folder (this one needs Claude Desktop open).
Write the brief the way you would for a new assistant. Anthropic's own advice is to state the outcome, the format and the inputs. This template covers all three:
Every [DAY AND TIME], use [FILE, FOLDER OR CONNECTED APP] to produce [THE OUTCOME, FOR EXAMPLE A ONE-PAGE SUMMARY].
Deliver it as [A DOC, A SPREADSHEET OR SLIDES] and keep the same structure every week.
Flag anything unusual, such as [YOUR RED FLAGS], at the top.
If data is missing, say so instead of guessing. Ask me before sending anything to anyone. If you find yourself pasting the same instructions into many tasks, turn them into a skill so Claude follows them every time. Our guide on how to create a Claude skill walks through it, and the Claude Skills directory lists ready-made ones.
What to watch next
- Usage. Long tasks eat more of your limit than chats. Check Settings, then Usage, after the first week of a schedule.
- Free and Team plans. The full merged experience with cloud tasks was still "coming soon" for these plans at the time of writing.
- Known gaps. The Help Center lists a few: no branching from an earlier point in a conversation, no adding files from GitHub, and incognito chats still open in the old experience.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch back to separate Chat and Cowork modes?
No. Anthropic's Help Center says that once your account has the new experience, the separate Chat and Cowork options do not come back. Your old Cowork tasks, projects and files carry over.
Do scheduled tasks in Claude cost extra?
There is no separate fee, but every task counts toward your plan's usage limits, and long tasks that search the web, run code or create files use more than a quick question. You can check your usage in Settings, then Usage.
Is Claude Cowork still a separate product?
Not in the new experience. Everything Cowork did is available from any conversation, while the model picker and the Code tab for Claude Code stay where they were.
Does Claude ask before it sends emails or changes files?
By default, yes. The permission setting starts on Manual, where Claude asks before each action; you can switch a conversation to Auto, where it keeps going and runs automated safety checks before acting.
