OpenCode is a free, open source coding agent that works with almost any model provider, while Claude Code is Anthropic's own agent and comes with a Claude subscription. If you want Claude models at a flat monthly price, Claude Code is the simpler deal. If you want to pick your own model, run local models or avoid depending on one vendor, OpenCode is the better fit.

What each one is

Two agents, two business models

OpenCode

An open source agent from Anomaly for the terminal, a desktop app and the web. You bring the model: an API key, a ChatGPT login, OpenCode's own plans or a local model.

Claude Code

Anthropic's agent for the terminal, desktop app, editors and web. It runs Claude models, paid through a Claude plan or an Anthropic API key.

The agents look alike in daily use: both read your project, plan, edit files, run commands and let you undo. The real differences are which models you can use, how you pay for them and where your prompts end up.

Models: one family or almost any

Claude Code runs Claude models only, with Opus 5.5 as the default and Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable 5.1 a /model command away.

OpenCode connects to more than 75 providers through Models.dev, from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google to OpenRouter and local runners like Ollama and LM Studio. You switch with /connect and /models.

That rule is the single biggest cost difference between the two tools. A Claude subscription covers Claude Code; it doesn't cover Claude inside OpenCode.

Cost: what you actually pay

Monthly subscription price in USD, October 2026
  • OpenCode Go$10
  • Claude Pro$20
  • OpenCode Go Plus$40
  • Claude Max 5x$100
  • Claude Max 20x$200

From OpenCode Go and Claude's pricing page. Claude Pro is $200 a year if you pay yearly.

Those subscriptions buy different things. Claude plans give you Claude models inside Claude Code. OpenCode Go gives you a curated list of mostly open source models, with published request estimates per model, for use in OpenCode or any other agent.

Here is every route side by side:

SetupWhat you payWhat you get
Claude Code on a Claude plan$20, $100 or $200 a monthClaude models within your plan's limits
OpenCode with an Anthropic API keyPer token at Anthropic's list pricesThe same Claude models, metered
OpenCode with a ChatGPT Plus or Pro loginYour existing ChatGPT planOpenAI models under your ChatGPT plan
OpenCode Go$10 or $40 a monthCurated, mostly open source models, with usage limits
OpenCode ZenPay as you go, starting with a $20 balanceCurated models at cost, with no markup
OpenCode with a local modelNo model feesYour own hardware does the work

If you pick the API-key route for Claude models, these are the list prices:

Claude API, per million tokens
$4

Opus 5.5 input

$20

Opus 5.5 output

$2

Sonnet 5.5 input

$10

Sonnet 5.5 output

From Claude's pricing page. Prompt caching cuts the cost of repeated input, which coding agents rely on.

Coding agents read your files again and again, so metered Claude usage adds up quickly on long sessions. If you'd use Claude models most working days, compare your expected token bill with the $20 Pro plan before you choose the API route. Our Claude Code pricing guide covers every plan.

Privacy: where your code goes

Who sees your prompts

OpenCode with a cloud model

OpenCode says it stores none of your code or context, but every prompt goes to the provider you picked, under that provider's terms.

OpenCode with a local model

Prompts stay on your machine when the model runs locally, for example through Ollama or LM Studio.

OpenCode Zen

Models are hosted in the US, and providers follow a zero-retention policy, with exceptions OpenCode lists on its Zen page.

Claude Code

Runs on your computer and talks directly to Anthropic's API, with no separate backend server or remote code index.

On Claude's consumer plans, you choose whether your chats and coding sessions help train models, under Settings, then Privacy. If you allow it, Anthropic keeps that data in de-identified form for up to five years; Team and Enterprise plans don't train on your content by default.

Before you point either agent at client or company code, run through this:

Setup effort

Both install in a minute; OpenCode asks one extra decision up front, which provider to use. On Mac or Linux, OpenCode 2 installs with:

Terminal
curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/v2/install | bash

Homebrew (brew install anomalyco/tap/opencode-v2) and npm (npm install -g @opencode/cli) work too, per the OpenCode docs. On Windows, package managers aren't supported for version 2, so download the standalone Windows binary or the desktop app from the same page.

For Claude Code, follow our install guide. Then the first session compares like this:

If you also use Codex or Gemini, our Codex comparison and Gemini CLI comparison cover those agents the same way.

Quick check0 of 2 correct

Can you use your Claude Pro or Max subscription inside OpenCode?

What decides how private your code is in OpenCode?

What to do next

Pick one small project and decide what matters most to you: model choice, a fixed price, or privacy. If it's model choice or privacy, install OpenCode and connect a provider or a local model.

If it's a fixed price and Claude's models, start Claude Code on Pro instead. Our Claude Code course covers setup, prompting and real projects if you go that way.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes OpenCode?

OpenCode is built by a company called Anomaly and developed in the open on GitHub, where anyone can read the code, report issues and contribute.

Does OpenCode support MCP servers and skills?

Yes. Its docs cover MCP servers, agent skills, plugins, custom tools and LSP servers, so most of the extensions people use in Claude Code have an OpenCode equivalent.

Can OpenCode and Claude Code share the same project instructions?

Yes. OpenCode works from an AGENTS.md file, and Claude Code 2.1.277 or later reads AGENTS.md whenever the project has no CLAUDE.md, so one file can serve both.

What is the difference between OpenCode 1 and OpenCode 2?

OpenCode 2 is the current version, with its own docs and a guide for migrating from version 1. Both use the opencode command, so you can't install them side by side under their default names.

Can I use OpenCode with my GitHub Copilot subscription?

Yes. OpenCode lets you log in with GitHub to use your Copilot account, so the models come out of your Copilot plan.
