Most business owners should start with the free academy of the tool they will actually use: n8n Academy, Make Academy or Zapier Academy. They are free to join, short, maintained by the companies that build the tools, and they teach the real interface. Pay for a course only when you need one of two things: a live cohort where someone builds alongside you, or a developer course such as DeepLearning.AI's Agentic AI, if you write Python and want to build agents from scratch.

Pick the tool before the course

An automation course teaches you a tool. If you take a Make course and then build in n8n, half of it won't transfer. So decide on the tool first: our n8n vs Zapier vs Make comparison covers pricing and learning curves, and the roundup of the best AI automation tools covers the wider field.

Three kinds of automation course

Tool academies

Free official training from n8n, Make and Zapier. Current, practical and tied to one tool.

Code-first agent courses

DeepLearning.AI, Hugging Face and Microsoft teach agents in Python. Powerful, but built for people who code.

No-code agent courses

Live cohorts and recorded courses that build agents with tools such as Claude Code, n8n or custom GPTs, without code.

The verdict by learner type

If you are a business owner building your first automation

Start with your tool's own academy. n8n's Essentials course takes most learners 2 to 4 hours, grades you on hands-on workflow exercises, and ends with a badge and a certificate of completion. Its page is clear that this is not a certification, and n8n plans a certification program later. You need an n8n instance to practice: n8n Cloud has a free trial, and self-hosting is free.

Zapier Academy says every course and path is free with a free Zapier account; its AI Builder Path runs about 105 minutes and ends with a certificate you can add to LinkedIn. Make's academy is also free with a free Make account and awards digital badges (Make's announcement).

  • Choose these if you want a working automation this week at no cost.
  • Skip them if you have no idea which tool to use yet. Decide that first, or you will learn the wrong interface.

For a guided first build, our n8n tutorial for beginners walks from a web form to an email and a spreadsheet.

If you don't code but want AI agents

Three routes, from cheapest to most hands-on:

  1. A recorded course. On Udemy, n8n: AI Agents & Automation for Absolute Beginners by Logix Academy covers n8n, Zapier, document Q&A and multi-agent setups in 24 lectures, updated in July 2026. The price depends on your country and the current sale.
  2. A university-branded program. Vanderbilt's Agentic AI and AI Agents for Leaders on Coursera is three courses, from a primer on agents to building custom GPTs, with no coding. Coursera's per-course estimates add up to about 32 hours, more than the headline 4 weeks at 3 hours a week.
  3. A live cohort. On Maven, Build AI Agents That Do Your Job with Claude Code costs $1,750 for four live sessions from November 10 to 19, 2026, and Your AI C-Suite, built on Claude Cowork, costs $995 for 13 live sessions from November 8 to December 20, 2026. Both state no coding is required and show the Maven Guarantee.
  • Choose a cohort if you have tried alone and stalled, and you want someone to unblock you live.
  • Choose the recorded or Coursera route if you mostly need structure and can work alone.

If you code and want to build agents from scratch

Agentic AI by Andrew Ng is the most complete option: 31 videos and about 10 hours on reflection, tool use, planning and multi-agent patterns, with intermediate Python required. Videos are free to audit; quizzes, labs and the certificate need Pro, at $25 a month billed annually or $30 billed monthly.

The free Hugging Face Agents Course teaches smolagents, LlamaIndex and LangGraph at about 3 to 4 hours a week, with two free certificates. Microsoft's AI Agents for Beginners has 18 lessons with short videos and Python samples, and it needs an Azure account.

  • Choose DeepLearning.AI if you want the clearest teaching and a graded path.
  • Choose Hugging Face if you want free certificates and open source frameworks.

If you want to sell automation to clients

Learn the tool from its academy first, then add a community for peers and client questions. AI Automation Society on Skool is free, and its paid tier, AI Automation Society Plus, costs $129 a month with weekly Q&As; its page says monthly sales are final. Both groups are built around getting paid for AI solutions, so judge them by what members actually build, not by income talk. Our guide to whether AI courses are worth it lists the red flags to watch for.

Where ai school fits

Our automation course, Autopilot, is in early access and not released yet, so it is not ranked here. Its page describes automations for leads, email, social posting and connecting your tools without code, and the early access list gets it first at the $7 launch price. If you want to build an agent today, the released Claude Code course already includes a module on an agent that moves invoices from your inbox to your accountant and drafts quotes and contracts.

Learn it in the right order

From zero to a useful automation
  1. Pick one task

Something you repeat every week that follows clear steps

  2. Pick one tool

n8n, Make or Zapier, based on price and how you work

  3. Take its academy

The free official course, start to finish

  4. Build your task

Your own workflow, with approval switched on

  5. Add the AI step

Classify, extract or draft, with a check after it

Before you open any course, write your task as a spec. It tells you which lessons matter and which you can skip:

Turn a repeated task into an automation spec
I want to automate this task: [DESCRIBE THE TASK]. It happens [HOW OFTEN] and takes me [MINUTES] each time.
The tools involved are [APPS, SUCH AS GMAIL, GOOGLE SHEETS, A WEB FORM].
Write a short spec with: the trigger, each step in order, which steps need AI (reading, sorting or writing) and which are plain rules, what the AI must output, the check after each AI step, and what should happen when something fails.
Then list the 3 skills I need to learn in [n8n, MAKE OR ZAPIER] to build it, in the order I should learn them.

Quick check0 of 2 correct

You run a small business and have never built an automation. What should you do first?

Which course fits someone who writes Python and wants to build agents from scratch?

What to do next

Write down the one task you repeat most each week, run the spec prompt above, and choose your tool. Then take that tool's free academy course this week and build the task with approval switched on. If you would rather learn automation with a structured, no-code path for leads, email and social posting, join the early access list for the AI automation course.

First automation planning worksheet

A fill-in worksheet that turns one repeated task into a ready-to-build automation spec: trigger, steps, AI step, checks and costs, plus which course module to study for each part.

Frequently asked questions

Are n8n, Make and Zapier certificates worth anything?

They are certificates of completion, not professional certifications, and n8n's course page says so directly. They show that you finished the official training, which helps a little when you sell automation services, but a working example for a client helps much more.

How long does it take to build a first automation?

A few hours with an official academy. n8n says most learners finish its first course in 2 to 4 hours, and Zapier lists about 105 minutes for its AI Builder path, which goes from a first Zap to agentic AI workflows.

What is the difference between an automation course and an AI agent course?

Automation courses teach workflows with fixed steps, often with one AI step inside. Agent courses teach systems where the AI chooses its own steps and tools. Most businesses get more value from automation first, and agents make more sense once those basics work.

Is the ai school automation course available yet?

Not yet. Autopilot is in early access: it is being filmed, and people on the early access list get it first at the $7 launch price. The released Claude Code course already includes an agent module for invoices, email and quotes.
