AI agents are already doing everyday business work: researching leads, answering support questions, booking appointments, chasing invoices and keeping records tidy. Below are 25 examples grouped by department and industry, each with what the agent does, tools you could use and how hard it is to set up. Start with an easy one in the area where you lose the most hours.

Not sure what counts as an agent? Our guide to what an AI agent is has the short version: it decides its own steps and uses tools to finish a job. Every example below meets that bar.

How we rate difficulty

Easy

A ready-made product or a single-tool setup. Working in a day.

Medium

A no-code build that connects two to four apps. Plan a week of testing.

Hard

Sensitive data, regulated work or several systems. Plan a careful pilot, ideally with expert help.

Sales agents

Sales agents save the hours between "a lead arrived" and "a person replied".

What a few of these cost to start

Several examples cost little or nothing to try, because the agent ships inside a plan or a free tier:

Starting costs worth knowing
$0.99

per Intercom Fin outcome, such as a resolved conversation

400

free Zapier agent activities each month

$0

extra for Shopify Sidekick, which comes with Shopify plans

From Fin pricing, Zapier pricing and Shopify Sidekick, checked 18 October 2026.

The real cost is usually your setup and review time in the first month. Budget a few hours of checking for every agent that touches customers.

How to pick your first agent

Match your biggest headache to a starting point:

If your biggest problem isStart with
Leads waiting hours for a reply1 or 2
The same support questions every day5 or 8
Missed calls while you work22
Admin that eats your evenings13, 15 or 16
Not knowing what competitors are doing10
Reports nobody has time to write12 or 24

Then run a short pilot before you rely on it:

Pilot any of these in four weeks
  1. Week 1

Do the task yourself and write down every step and rule

  2. Week 2

Run the agent on past cases and compare with your answers

  3. Week 3

Let it draft live work while you approve everything

  4. Week 4

Measure the time saved, then expand, fix or stop

Not sure which task to pick? Give your week to an AI and let it shortlist candidates with you:

Find your best first agent
Here is a list of the tasks I do every week, with roughly how long each one takes: [YOUR TASK LIST].
My business: [WHAT YOU SELL AND TO WHOM]. Tools I already use: [YOUR APPS].
Pick the three tasks that would make the best first AI agent. Favor tasks that are frequent, follow clear rules and are easy for me to check.
For each one, describe what the agent would do, which of my tools it would connect to, where I should approve its work, and one risk to watch.

Frequently asked questions

Are website chatbots AI agents?

Only some are. A chatbot that answers from a fixed script is not an agent; one that can look up an order, book an appointment or update a record on its own is acting as an agent.

Can AI agents make and answer phone calls?

Yes. Voice agent platforms answer and place calls, book appointments and transfer callers to a person. Outbound calls made with an AI voice are regulated in many countries, so check the consent rules before calling anyone.

What is an example of an AI agent in everyday life?

A store's support assistant that looks up your order and starts a return without a human is one. Others are a phone assistant that books your dentist appointment and an email assistant that sorts your inbox and drafts replies for you to approve.

Can an AI agent replace a virtual assistant?

For narrow, repeatable tasks like inbox sorting, research and first drafts, often yes. For judgment calls, relationships and anything that needs accountability, a person still does better, so many owners use agents to make their assistant faster instead.

Is it safe to let an AI agent touch customer data?

It can be if you use a business plan that does not train on your data, give the agent only the access it needs and keep a log of what it does. In regulated fields like healthcare, the vendor must sign the required agreements, such as a BAA in the US, before it handles patient data.
